Wolverines in the continental United States could be wiped out by the end of the century if temperatures continue to rise, according to a new study from a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
Springtime snow cover helps protect wolverine dens from predators, and the animal is built to thrive in deep powder. But, Synte Peacock, a NCAR scientist, applied computer models projecting climate change to the wolverine habitat in the northern Rockies. Under two of the three projected levels of severity of global warming, Peacock found that springtime snow cover will largely vanish in wolverine habitat by the second half of the century.
Similarly, Peacock found that summertime temperatures will skyrocket. Currently, the average August temperature in wolverine habitat is 72 degrees. That could rise to above 90 degrees by century’s end, according to the more pessimistic models.
“Species that depend on snow cover for their survival are likely to be very vulnerable to climate change,” Peacock said. “It’s highly uncertain whether wolverines will continue to survive in the Lower 48, given the changes that are likely to take place there.”

Aaaarghhh! No end to this garbage. All the bogus projections aside this is seriously stupid.
“Springtime snow cover helps protect wolverine dens from predators, and the animal is built to thrive in deep powder.”
First, they’re f*cking wolverines. The only possible significant predator is another wolverine. So if they’re all dead from the planetary fever…
They are not “built to thrive in deep powder.” They can move in it better than some species because they have big feet. But the implication here is beyond absurd. I have seen many wolverine tracks in the snow and, given the choice, they travel on hard packed snow or rocks.
Could go but, really, why? Seriously, seriously stupid.
You said it! I agree! Those “Sweet” little Cuddly critters need all the help they can get so we need to send some environmentalists to keep them company in their dens. 😉
This study is insane, wolverines killed by 5c, they live all over northern north America. This is about a realistic as Chuck Norris being killed by a spit ball, shot by an asthmatic 6 year old.
BTW Chuck uses a pissed off wolverine as a loofa when he showers.
I’d like to see one of those brilliant researchers stick their hand into a wolverine den and try to pull one out for “research” purposes.
