Monbiot Feels That Orwellian Society Is Safer

Speed camera switch-off empowers reckless driving
Petrol-heads twist the facts and treat it as a game, but real people die when these devices are turned off

The experiment is over and the results are in. In April, Thames Valley police switched Oxfordshire’s speed cameras back on. They had been off for eight months, as a result of the government’s decision to cut the road safety grant. Then the police began assessing the damage. In the 31 days before the cameras were switched off (July 2010), the machines caught 2,286 speeding motorists. In the 30 days after they were switched back on, they caught 5,917.

If the government had everyone under continual surveillance 24×7, they could reduce crime to zero. They could also eliminate STDs and pregnancy.

Why go to all the trouble and cost of monitoring everyone? Just take it to the logical conclusion and perform genocide on the human species?

Orwellian or Scrooge McDuckian? From an article… “Thames Valley Police has been able to switch the cameras back on again by cutting it’s back office costs by 25 per cent for administering the cameras and it would seem by altering the speed criteria at which a motorist qualifies for a speed awareness course instead of a fine. Revenue from the former can be kept by while revenue from fines is passed back to the Treasury – as we reported earlier this year the Association of Chief Police Officers has been lobbying for such a change.” http://road.cc/content/news/33815-50-cent-rise-deaths-oxfordshire-roads-after-speed-camera-switch

All we need are more speed traps. I recently got a ticket for going 27 mph in a school zone, even though there wasn’t a kid in sight.

The UK lost the best decision maker it had since WW II when Margaret Thatcher retired. Since then, the govt she removed from daily life, and the taxes she reduced have been reversed to a larger than ever imposition on britains.
Their green policy is horrific, and it appears the likes of Greenpeace and WWF are really in control.
Here’s an excellent piece by Matt Ridley on their current energy policies – its a looming disaster. I think Margaret Thatcher still has the pair of balls that the Conservatives used to own.

Here in mid-TN, they reduced the BAC from .10 to .08 some time ago and the head of MADD said (after a year ) they didn’t understand WHY drunk driving actually increased. None of these people can reason or do math. Apparently casting a bigger net doesn’t mean anything to them.

Does the article go on to say how many people died because the cameras were switched off? I’ve decided to switch off Monibot.
