Yet another long range forecasting agency has pinned its colours to the mast by predicting a colder than average winter 2011-12 across Ireland and the United Kingdom.
UK-based Positive Weather Solutions says the winter months will be colder than average everywhere and that some regions will experience significantly colder than average temperatures between December and March.

It seems like the UK has had a upper level trough over them forever, thus no BBQ summer this year. Persistence sometimes is the best predicting tool, so probably another cold winter.
Global coal consumption jumps almost 50% yet global temps drop

It’s grey sky and rain here at the moment. I have plenty of logs for the coming winter though and for entertainment I have the Met Office predictions to look forward to.
People shouldn’t just be looking at the official winter months (Dec to March) – they should take note of the possibility of an early onset of winter weather in what is late autumn (Oct, Nov), as happened last year in the UK.
The reason for this is that too many plants and trees have set seed and have ripe fruit/berries far too early this year. When holly berries are already rope at the end of August in South Wales, when hawthorn berries are ripe, when Rowans had ripe red berries from the middle of July, and when my own apples have been ripe to eat off the trees for the last ten days – apples which usually ripen at the end of September, then be warned!
I’m sure I don’t need to point out here that some hot days in April do not have an influence on early ripening during a cold and wet late spring/early summer.
It’s not just that the fruit, berries and nuts have all ripened early, it is the abundance of them and the behavour of the animals, that should have us concerned about the coming winter. When out picking blackberries the wildlife in the bushes immediately in front of me has ignored me and continued foraging, because they know far better than us what is coming.
