Ice-Free Arctic Claims Are Sheer Stupidity

There is a huge mass of thick (3-5 metre) ice up against the Canadian Archipelago and Greenland coasts. There is no indication that these are significantly declining or threatened.

It is time for people to stop being idiots about this.

    You cannot fix stupid.

  2. gator69 says:

“ricidulouosly”. I invented a word, almost. That’s ricidulous!

  3. Jay says:

Steve, you may have addressed this somewhere but is there a sensor failure going on in the arctic? I saw large areas greyed out on the nsidc map, and that has been happening more often. Thanks for any info.

    • Julienne Stroeve says:

Jay, it’s happening in the SSM/I F15 and F17 satellites and AMSR-E. I’m thinking it’s related to the solar flare activity.

      • Tony Duncan says:

        Julienne,

        Wow,
West of Greenland? is that the section you said was being considered 100% ice? so the actual numbers are still unclear? Does that effect measurement of ice extent and Area?

  4. Andy WeissDC says:

The propaganda mill must be working overtime. I keep hearing people say that we have an all time record low with respect to Arctic sea ice. Then when I say we don’t, they say I’m paranoid.

I might be paranoid, but it has nothing to do with Arctic sea ice.

    • Sundance says:

Andy, if you are a conservative white man the progressive/left is now targeting you as a villain in its campaign to tax CO2. I’m not sure why they are only going after white conservative men and not conservative men that happen to be Black, Asian, Hispanic or other non-white ethnicities, but it is what it is with the progressive/left. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before CWM are assaulted and given beat downs by radical enviro “flash mobs” most likely armed with fire extinguishers (think about it).:)

Anyhow it is best to remain paranoid when the radical left targets you for being white. If you’re not white never mind, you’re not in danger. 🙂

      • Tony Duncan says:

Sundance and if you are a moderate republican of any stripe, the regressive right is targeting you as in league with the socialist Sharia party.
let’s see what is the tally for murders by fanatic progressive left wingers toward CWM so far this? Hmmm. Appears to be zero.
And what about the tally for fanatic right wingers toward socialist sharia party members. Hmmm 87? Of course he actually DID kill socialists so maybe he was not being paranoid, and that makes it OK.
them lefties better get a move on it though!

      • Sundance says:

Tony you lost me with sharia socialists and your death scorecard. I’m not sure how it pertains to progressive/left types like Chris Mooney painting targets on white men who question unresolved issues of AGW or who may disagree with Al Gore in light of all the attacks on white people since May, by flash mobs, which was the subject of my post that I presented in a whimsical light hearted manner as a response to Andy’s paranoia comment.

As for Republicans well everything I know about Republicans I learned from Howard Dean and Howard has taught me that there aren’t any MODERATE Republicans. They are all EXTREME types and president Obama was right to tell them they were welcome on his bus but only if they sat in the back of the bus now that he’s driving. 🙂

      You’re not paranoid Andy, you’re just in d…… (choke), ddd……. (gag), d.d.d.d.d.d (sputter)–well you know what I mean. 🙂

“There is a huge mass of thick (3-5 metre) ice up against the Canadian Archipelago and Greenland coasts. There is no indication that these are significantly declining or threatened.”

The idiocy lies in the reference to the Canadian Archipelago which has the coldest water due to the shallowness of the oceans.

By the way, when will you start looking at concentration images?

  6. Ill wind blowing says:

I further recommend ice area images. After all, if the extent is the same but the concentration is dropping, then you have less ice area. This means a decrease in the total mass of ice.

    • Scott says:

But is the concentration really dropping like that or is there confusion with surface melt ponds? Said confusion is the reason that extent is considered a more accurate measure than area.

Personally, I think it’s a combination of the two…true lower concentration but not as low as reported due to melt ponds.

      • suyts says:

Where are you at on your spread sheet? I think our certitude is severely compromised. When satellite bands go out, is that the only time they are in error, or is it indicative or a more general difficulty?

      • Tony Duncan says:

        SUYTS

is the area around greenland that shows such high ice concentration NOW the same area as we were discussing huge open areas of the sea in the 20’s? Is that the point you were trying to make to me?

      • Scott says:

James – daily minimum JAXA extent is currently predicted at 4579638 km^2. For reference, this is between 2007 and 2008, but closer to 2008.

Note that the past two days support my questioning of the melt ponds in the comments above – the CT area data has shown an increase in area the last two days. I don’t know of anyone that would actually believe such an increase, so it’s clear that it’s noise, and I’m guessing it’s melt pond refreezing over or slightly changing to get lumped back into the ice category.

Now, the real question isn’t whether it’s a melt pond issue or not…it’s whether this year’s melt pond issues are more severe than other years’…namely 2007. R. Gates seemed basically 100% sure this year would set a record for lowest area. I’m thinking it’ll be close and depends on the above issue in addition to weather and thickness issues.

      • Latitude says:

since the satellites read any water…..as water
Including melt ponds and ice scattered with some water in between

    • Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

If elephants had wings there is the possibility they could fly! Each group has their preferred Al-Gore-Rhythm to determine some quality / quantity of regional polar ice.

  7. Al Gored says:

But Herr Doktor Monnet reports that on a helicopter monitoring flight four pieces of ice were seen melting.

    • suyts says:

So he says, but the picture was blurry, and we’re pretty sure they would have been more blurry again so he had his buddy look at the ice cubes and verify that it was indeed, something white and floating. And, using perfectly good rationale, we know there will be lots more white and floating things in the water………. especially if the rioters in London have their way.
