Arctic sea ice poised to undergo record decline in mid-August
A strong high pressure system with a central pressure of 1035 mb has developed over the Arctic north of Alaska, and will bring clear skies and warm southerly winds to northeast Siberia and the Arctic during the coming week, accelerating Arctic sea ice loss. Widespread areas of northeastern Siberia are expected to see air temperatures 4 – 12°C (7 – 22°F) above average during the coming week, and the clockwise flow of air around the high pressure system centered north of Alaska will pump this warm air into the Arctic. Arctic sea ice extent, currently slightly higher than the record low values set in 2007, should fall to to its lowest extent for the date by the third week of August as the clear skies and warm southerly winds melt ice and push it away from the coast of Siberia. This weather pattern, known as the Arctic Dipole, was also responsible for the record sea ice loss in 2007, but was stronger that year.
It is now the end of third week of August, and extent has hardly changed since he made that forecast on August 12. Looks like a classic case of Dipolar Disorder to me.
Does anyone pay attention to Dr. Jeff Masterbedwetter?
He can’t make a forecast without using the words slammed, crashed, roars, dangerous, etc
…and that’s just a squall line
Irene is coming to get you for dissing Jeff! He is probably her biggest fan!
Irene is about the sloppest wannabe I’ve ever seen….
zoon out and look at that mess….and of course Dr. Jeff is hyping it
Seeing how they have narrowed down US landfall from Galveston to Main and estimated rain fall between 1 and 20 inches east of the Appalachians if she follows the East Coast.
I personally prefer the hysteria at Accuweather as they have many contributors rather than just Jeff!
LOL…….the cone of death from Rio to New York
Jeff has a blog, and the people that comment on the blog are hysterical….
…..I don’t mean that like funny hysterical
I actually wandered by his site a few times but thought what they had might be contagious so I stay away!
I visit Accuweather as penance!
I was at a broadcasters convention when I first became acquainted with the name and my first reaction was to proclaim: Now that is an Oxymoron if I ever heard one! The nice folks representing Accuweather were not amused to say the least and now I find them about equal to the NWS in their forecast ability. Also they tend to get all excited this time of year about every cloud crossing the Atlantic!
I’m sure he’ll soon argue that mid-August is yet to begin.
At a minimum, it’s north polar disorder – while we’re at it with puns.
The ice looks as it were to start to freeze this week. With the sun sinking and clear skies the most probable event is falling temperatures and more ice.
