A couple of observations.
- The wind compacted the ice in the Beaufort Sea today.
- Shadows are appearing on the ice. No more midnight sun, except for very close to the pole.

Steve, a satellite taking ice measurements….
how would it read that?
As mostly ice? or as mostly water?
Wasn’t that the problem with melt ponds before?
I think the satellites do a reasonably good job, but the concentration shifts around from day to day depending on localized wind currents and surface melt as you mentioned.
bouncing back and forth between this google earth and what you posted from the Navy forecast, I see a lot of visible ice that is missing from the navy satellite prediction.
Look at the Leptev Sea, not the clouds………….
That’s why I think microwaves are reading any amount of water, as all water……….
Yep, JAXA showed another big extent loss today. Still have a month+ to go to see how this all pans out.

Just noise
And another bigger loss today.
It only takes Steve to mention it will be slow for 2 weeks to the God’s of the Arctic to make it go really big .. 🙂 :p

You are taking Tony Duncan’s place as chief moron.
Andy, I was talking about the 08/05 number…the same one you are…the prelim number came out ~15 min before my posting. 😛
-Scott
Still telling the compacting prior to melting tale, Steven? And how does this shadows without sun thing works?
??

It’s time for Tony Duncan to move over, he’s had that exalted position for far too long.
I’ll have that dunce cap off his head before he knows it.

20110801 = 6.6091000
20110802 = 6.6681700
20110803 = 6.5675000
20110804 = 6.4907200
20110805 = 6.3799000
Hmm, should that first be 6.7091000, or was there really an uptick between the 1st and 2nd of the month?
Peter, yes there was an uptick between the 1st and the 2nd, either a result of ice divergence, new ice formation or weather effects. Because weather effects can give false ice signals is one of the reasons why we do 5-day running means. While we try to filter out weather effects, some still remain.
