Maybe The Rules Haven’t Changed After All

Ice coverage is slightly about last year’s record low but still well below the 30-year average.

Ice coverage is well above last year

Back when the sea was thick and lasted for years, cyclones tended to spread the ice out and actually increase its extent, said Julienne Stroeve of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. Now, when ice gets spread out, it simply breaks up and disappears.

The ice is spreading out and the extent is increasing, exactly as it did in years past.

“As our ice cover has thinned, some of our old rules are changing,” said Stroeve.

No they aren’t. Ice extent just took a large jump up and ice now fills most of the Beaufort Sea.

What else could we expect from Stroeve?

“Back when the sea was thick and lasted for years…”

Yeah, I remember those thick seas from my youth. The seas today are all thin and watery. I want my thick seas back.

And here’s what “norman” had to say about this (from a comment under the posting linked to above):

The planet is in process of making a switch to a new energy state and weather / ocean current pattern. Choas theory on a global scale in process. It’s likely what happened when the last ice age began. And will happen again as the current ice age comes to a final close. Things are going to get interesting in a heartbeat.

“making a switch to a new energy state” Hmmm. This stuff reminds me of the character in Waiting for Godot, the Exploited One, when he gets to make his big speech.

Steve, you moderated my comment out about the Viking Vision. What was wrong with it? Just so I don’t do it again.
