Real Heroes

Thirty-seven years ago today, 14 inches of rain fell in four hours in the mountains southwest of Fort Collins below Rocky Mountain National Park. This produced a massive flood which killed 143 people.

Officers Purdy and Conley gave their lives to warn as many people as they could before the flood waters hit. They knew that they would not survive, but saved dozens or hundreds of lives by warning people to get up to higher ground.

This was back during a different time – when the job of the police was to protect the citizenry.
