Doomed Rocky Mountain Skiing Update

The study by two Colorado researchers says Aspen Mountain in Colorado and Park City in Utah will see dramatic changes even with a reduction in carbon emissions, which fuel climate change.

If carbon emissions increase, the average temperature at Park City will be 10.4 degrees warmer by 2100, and there likely will be no snowpack, according to the study. Skiing at Aspen, with an average temperature 8.6 degrees higher than now, will be marginal.

Skiing conditions in 2100? I spect I will have been dead for 50 years.

  2. They have so little faith in the FAMOUS climate of Colorado–they don’t deserve to live there.

If this is true, then how was it that the tree borers were able to stay alive during the winters long enough to kill so many of the lodge pole pines? That is a sign of overall warmer winters. All the dead trees in the Colorado Mountains give the area a sense of an overwhelming human footprint.

    • Probably because you have no idea what you are talking about

“Generally speaking, the mountain pine beetle epidemic in Summit County is definitely declined,” said Cary Green, U.S. Forest Service timber management assistant for the White River National Forest eastern zone. “We haven’t seen any widespread damage since 2009/2010. I think Summit County’s clear in that.”

      • Avery Harden says:

Insect infestations always rise and fall in severity over time. I go out there every Febuary and there are lots of dead trees everywhere. My friend used to live with trees all around his house but now lives out in the open as he cut all his dead and dying trees down. He plows snow up there. His sense is that it is not as cold for as long as it used to be. There is less overall snow pack and the early spring ensures earlier melt and runoff. Insects may have played themselves out for now, but the environment is not the same as it once was. The human footprint must have something to do with all the dead trees one sees.

There are warm winters where beetles can live and then there are cold winters when they cannot. Nature always takes care of climax vegetation whether by fire or by pestilence. Take you pick.
