For years, the fossil fuel industry has lobbied the news media to accord the same weight to a handful of global warming skeptics that it accords the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – more than 2,000 scientists from 100 countries reporting to the United Nations.
Today, with the science having become even more robust – and the impacts as visible as the megastorm that covered much of the Gulf of Mexico – the press bears a share of the guilt for our self-induced destruction with the oil and coal industries
It has now been eight years since the US was hit by a major hurricane, the longest such period since 1869. Obama’s presidency has seen the fewest hurricane landfalls of any presidency in US history.
Gelbspan became hysterical in 2005 over hurricanes hitting the US, yet the presidencies of William Howard Taft, Grover Cleveland and Rutherford B. Hayes had a higher hurricane frequency than GWB.
It is remarkable how scientists can go into hysterics and start throwing around mindless paranoid political accusations – over things they understand nothing about.
Hurricane Katrina’s real name is zoning stupidity and bad luck with some seasoning of murphy sprinkled on it.
Sometimes it is hard to decide who is dumber, the media or the pseudo-scientists but then again they may be equal.
“For years, the fossil fuel industry has lobbied the news media to accord the same weight to a handful of global warming skeptics that it accords the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change”
Translation :
“For years, the man-made global warming industry has lobbied govt to accord the same weight in funding and grants that it receives in findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change”

Ross Gelbspan is not a scientist.
But he does have every appearance of being the epicenter of the efforts to portray skeptic climate scientists as crooks: http://gelbspanfiles.com/
As I pointed out a couple of years ago, Gelbspan is in a circular citation problem with Max Boykoff over the fabricated talking point of “accord the same weight to a handful of global warming skeptics”: ” ‘Media Too Fair to Climate Skeptics’, say reporters who’ve been unfair to skeptics” http://ow.ly/iWKi6
As I updated just a few days ago, one major news outlet has given skeptics no such equal media balance in 17+ years: “PBS NewsHour global warming coverage: IPCC/NOAA Scientists – 18; Skeptic Scientists – 0*” http://ow.ly/myXTB
From your bar graph, it looks lke Obama has reduced hurricane activity.
Hmmm… must be his liberal global warming policies.
The more interesting new point I hope to hear about is why the air over the hurricaine forming region has been less humid this year. Just science, not politics.
Avery, wow! rational question. The short answer is “climate change”!! It has happened before, and it will again, both with plus two billion humans, and sans any at all.
Avery! Good Question. The unproven theory of ‘man-made’ global warming calls for a Hot Spot to form in the upper Troposphere in the tropics, trapping not only a lot of heat, but a lot of moisture.
No heat, no moisture. Sort of puts the Kaibash on the theory, eh WUWT?
Such low curiosity for folks claiming to be interested in science. The question remains, why was there less than normal moisture in the air in the hurricaine forming region than normal? I don’t know, just thought it was an interesting question. Your knee jerk hostility belies your close mindedness.
Also, the models on the RealClimate site show fewer bigger hurricaines. Let your hostility reign.
I guess 50% of the time it is “above normal” and 50% below and so “less than normal” happens quite often. A Very Hard’un – not!
dunno either….it was my understanding that CO2 would increase temps a little bit….which would lead to higher humidity and a tipping point….and the higher humidity would lead to run away global warming
So it’s another failed prediction….
“Less humid this year” – than what? Other leading brands?
It fits the pattern of heavy rainfalls and severe droughts. I don’t say current weather is a response to climate change, but it is a heavy theme on this site that past severe weather is proof that todays bad weather is not unique. I say draw a truce on claiming weather proves or disproves climate change.
and that’s the point of Steven posting all this…
…glad you seem to have finally got it
And I say there goes another leg out from under AGW theory. Let’s see now–model predictions of temperature rise, gone. Increase in sea level rise, gone. Disappearing ice at the poles, gone. Seems to me AGW theory has landed on its behind.
Avery are you really that thick that you think the climate has morphed to always too wet or too dry and never Goldilock’s just right porridge? Even my kids clued on (with a little push from dad) to the mathematical nonsense of averaging systems that typically swing from one extreme to the other. This is the way weather / climate has always worked and always will work for many places on the planet. To play with these mythical “averages” as normal temperature etc is simply delusional. The average of extremes is useless information.
Defenses against critical reason take the form of clearly defined Rube Goldberg mechanisms. Calling repeatedly voiced logical arguments “mere talking points” is one of those contraptions, which is what has already happened with the hurricane lull and the warming lull and the ice melt lull and massive fertilization effect on plants and algae.
William Henry Harrison had most hurricanes per day of his presidency
