1981 : Scientists Warn Of Unprecedented Warming In The 21st Century

STUDY FINDS WARMING TREND THAT COULD RAISE SEA LEVELS

A team of Federal scientists says it has detected an overall warming trend in the earth’s atmosphere extending back to the year 1880. They regard this as evidence of the validity of the ”greenhouse” effect, in which increasing amounts of carbon dioxide cause steady temperature increases.

The seven atmospheric scientists predict a global warming of ”almost unprecedented magnitude” in the next century. It might even be sufficient to melt and dislodge the ice cover of West Antarctica, they say, eventually leading to a worldwide rise of 15 to 20 feet in the sea level. In that case, they say, it would ”flood 25 percent of Louisiana and Florida, 10 percent of New Jersey and many other lowlands throughout the world” within a century or less.

So far this century, we have had zero warming.

    It’s worse than we thought.

So far this century, we have had zero warming.

So you agree then? Global warming of ”almost unprecedented magnitude” is exactly what we got. You know, it COULD have raised sea levels too. Could have, but didn’t.

  2. Mohatdebos says:

It is time to start a “name and shame” campaign. For instance, I would include the following quote: “uncertainties are, to a large extent, recognized in the new report, signed by Dr. James Hansen and six colleagues at the space studies institute.” so that all your casual readers know who was behind the scam.

  3. geologyjim says:

Of course, it’s Hansen – – wrong again.

and this: “Dr. Hansen and his colleagues cite the observed surface temperatures of Mars and, particularly, Venus as support for their predicted greenhouse effect.”

That’s industrial-grade stupid, as discussed many times on this site. It’s the atmospheric pressure, not the composition

  4. Truth E. Ness says:

This century? If you start the plot at 2000, you get .07 degrees or so of warming this century, to be picky.

A team of Federal scientists says …

How was this determined? Using any variation on “double-blind methodology”? Or did the one ‘team’ go out SEEKING that which they FOUND (indicating a strong case of confirmation bias)?

The press report/the research study should have been nullified/invalidated on the spot.

  6. Eric Simpson says:

scientists says they have detected a warming trend.. they regard this as evidence of the greenhouse effect

That is evidence? So now the current 18 year flatlining in temperatures… is not evidence? Rising temps is evidence of the greenhouse effect, while flat or declining temps is not evidence? Jeff Tollefson writing in Nature notes that scientists have explanations for the pause that include “the quietest solar cycle in over a hundred years, increases in Asian pollution, more effective oceanic heat absorption, and even volcanic activity.”

It’s not even noted as a possibility that maybe an explanation for the pause is that CO2 is just not doing what the fear mongers proclaim it does?

It turns out that there is zero evidence that CO2 causes changes in temperature. Absolutely zero. Indeed, the actual evidence is more consistent with those that claim CO2 has practically no effect after ~ 200ppm. But in ~ 1988 the IPCC claimed that the ice core data going back hundreds of thousands of years showed direct evidence for CO2 causing temperature change. Well, a paper came out in 1999 that looked at the ice core data with greater granularity and showed that that claim was bogus. And even the ipcc, in 2003, had to admit that there is no evidence that CO2 causes temperature change. Yet, despite the fact that in 2005 Al Gore would have known this, he nevertheless went ahead and deceptively claimed in his movie that there is obvious evidence that CO2 causes temp change. “Projections based on mathematical models indicate the average temperature at the surface of the earth, starting by the end of this century, could increase by as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit by the year 2100. “

Nonsense. Utter nonsense. Not remotely possible from Man-Made CO2. 9 degrees F temperature increase by 2100 is so stupidly exaggerated it’s not even worth considering. What else did these morons come up with:

…scientists warned of possibly catastrophic consequences if the problem was not addressed.”

Catastrophic consequences? From an imaginary problem? And these are our leaders.

Prof. Dean Abrahamson of the University of Minnesota’s Hubert Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs called for a reduction of coal consumption; preservation of forests, which absorb carbon dioxide, and a well-financed program of research and analysis.

Oh yeah, get the well-financed programs going right away! Think of the grandchildren!

Senator Dave Durenberger, the Minnesota Republican who heads the subcommittee, said: ”One of the frustrations of dealing with this issue is that it is virtually beyond the grasp of human imagination. Despite what the best scientific minds in the world tell us, our instinct is to reject them out of hand.”

My instinct is not necessarily to reject them out of hand. I’d rather point my finger and laugh at them.

  8. Brian H says:

Out of hand means without further consideration or examination. Au contraire, the more examination they get the flimsier they look.
