The Darkening Of Science

Check out the latest BS from the team

18 September 2014

a darkening of the Greenland ice sheet could impact upon the entire world, as the hastening trend reduces the Arctic’s ability to reflect sunlight and increases global warming.

The world’s leading expert on the ice that covers the huge expanse of Greenland has told The Independent that he was “stunned” to see how much darker it has become in the past year – warning it could start a hugely damaging “cascading feedback loop” of the area becoming blacker as less and less light is reflected.

Greenland’s dark snow may start global warming ‘feedback loop’ – Environment – The Independent

Every summer, the snow along a 50 mile strip of western Greenland turns black from soot; glacial grinding and dust. I have seen this from the air since at least 1998, and commented about it several times on the blog. But then new snow falls. The image below is what Greenland looked like yesterday. Zinc oxide white.

  1. Black snow absorbs sunlight in the northern hemisphere, and warms the entire world, but in the southern hemisphere the millions of extra square km of white sea ice around Antarctica don’t reflect sunlight and have no effect on the world at all, and were predicted by Al Gore when he said the polar ice caps were melting.

  3. ozspeaksup says:

give em a cold winter or two more cool summers etc
and wait for the other side..we need to throw coal dust ON the snow to prevent the ice age
Hansen and many others I think suggested that waaaay back in the 79s.

It is as plain as the nose on your face! We are all going to die! Since no one gets out of here alive, that is not a very stunning deduction.

  6. Gail Combs says:

Old, MELTING snow is always dark and full of crap. Don’t these idiots ever get outside?

Is the only time they see snow when they are skiing on newly made man-made snow at expensive ski resorts?

  7. BallBounces says:

“a darkening of the Greenland ice sheet could impact upon the entire world, as the hastening trend reduces the Arctic’s ability to reflect sunlight and increases global warming.”

    template:

a ______ of the ________ could impact upon [insert region here], as the _______ trend _______ the [insert region here]’s ability to ________ and increases global warming.

    E.g.,

an increase in snowfall could impact upon North America, as the cooling trend debilitates the region’s ability to cope with weather weirding and increases global warming.

Someone should create a global warming scare generator.

WHAT THE HECK IS A MEMBER OF THE US EMBASSY DOING ON THIS LIST OF ‘specialists?

From the following it seems Evans specialty is Psy-Ops under the euphemism of ECON/EST meaning Economic- Education, Science and Technology Officer. He was there to assist in shaping the propaganda that was fed to the UK public on their shilling.

…During the recent tribunal the director of BBC News, Helen Boaden, took the stand to declare that the 2006 secret panel was comprised of “scientists with contrasting views.” But as the list proves, all present were solidly in the alarmist camp. …Incongruously, also in attendance was Trevor Evans, a member of the US embassy serving as ECON/EST Officer …With a body so loaded with one-sided opinions the only meaningful discussion among these “Specialists” would have been how best the BBC could “sell” it’s message on global warming. Critics could be forgiven for inferring that the few scientists there were only to advise how far the panel could go before any such “message” went deep into the realms of climate propaganda and meeting the bounds of any legal challenge under the BBC Charter.

I think the final paragraph is a reasonable assessment. Such a body simply could not deliver any sort of expertise on whether catastrophic warming is valid (so many of them being “aid” workers weren’t even fit to put the alarmist viewpoint. But they were admirably equipped to say how a propaganda campaign can be run.

I have done a bit of checking for Trevor Evans online. Assuming the people of that name who are a Berlin Professor and the boss of the American Rifle Association are different Trevors the only reference I can find is that he was Charge d’Affaires to Slovenia in 2000. That is a sort of junior ambassador to a country to small to have a full ambassadot, so quite a high ranking but low visibility post. This was just after the bombing of Yugoslavia so a post in Slovenia would be a sensitive one where one would certaibnly be reqiored to “lie abroad for his country”. Indeed a thought strikes. During the coup against Milosevic there was said to be a COA psy-ops operation said to be based in Zagreb Specifically, these were the psyops used to bring down Milosevic. Was Evans part of that? Certainly it would explain how one could be so relatively high ranking and yet invisible. ECON/EST means Economic- Education, Science and Technology Officer but that seems a meaningless catch all cover.

Trevor Evans and his wife have an extremely nauseating website up on the internet where they are busy waving the American flag and shedding crocodile tears.

The scandal that won’t die: the newest installment 11 January 2014.
BBC’s six-year cover-up of secret ‘green propaganda’ training for top executives

….Then director of television Jana Bennett opened the seminar by telling the executives to ask themselves: ‘How do you plan and run a city that is going to be submerged?’ And she asked them to consider if climate change laboratories might offer material for a thriller.

A lobby group with close links to green campaigners, the International Broadcasting Trust (IBT), helped to arrange government funding for both the climate seminar and other BBC seminars run by Mr Harrabin – one of which was attended by then Labour Cabinet Minister Hilary Benn.

Applying for money from Mr Benn’s Department for International Development (DFID), the IBT promised Ministers the seminars would influence programme content for years to come.

The BBC began its long legal battle to keep details of the conference secret after an amateur climate blogger spotted a passing reference to it in an official report….

    • Gail Combs says:

They will stop when we all live in 12ft X 12ftsustainable apartments in UN Agenda 21 Transit Villages.

The Elite are very committed to returning the world to feudalism and abolishing the pesky Middle Class that challenges their money and power structure. That is what Marx attack on the bourgeoisie (Middle Class) was all about.

“The bourgeoisie, wherever it has got the upper hand, has put an end to all feudal, patriarchal, idyllic relations. It has pitilessly torn asunder the motley feudal ties that bound man to his ‘natural superiors,’ and has left remaining no other nexus between man and man than naked self-interest, callous ‘cash payment.’ It has drowned the most heavenly ecstasies of religious fervor, of chivalrous enthusiasm, of philistine sentimentalism, in the icy water of egotistical calculation. It has resolved personal worth into exchange value, and in place of the numberless indefeasible chartered freedoms, has set up that single, unconscionable freedom—Free Trade. In one word, for exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, it has substituted naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation.

The bourgeoisie has stripped of its halo every occupation hitherto honored and looked up to with reverent awe. It has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage laborers.

The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family its sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation.”

They’re doing a great job of eliminating the middle-class in the USA. Now if we get amnesty for 11-20 million, plus all the relatives of theirs they will be allowed to bring in, job done. It isn’t too far into the future that this will come to pass as they are merely waiting until after the 2014 elections to move amnesty. It matters not if 80% of Americans oppose amnesty, our ‘betters’ know what is good for us. Boehner said amnesty/immigration reform (same thing) is good for the economy.

    • darrylb says:

Gail, Rehashing a bit about an illuminating moment about which you had posted and to which I responded, regarding higher pressure – lower CO2 absorption being re emitted as KE as apposed to EM; I just had an additional thought.
With the CO2 being saturated, any additional CO2 would of course mean that saturation would occur at a lower altitude, and then hypothetically there would be an increase in down-welling radiation. However, with the saturation at a lower altitude, the pressure were be even greater and it would follow that the relative amount of kinetic energy exchange would increase and the EM energy decrease. This of course is a calculus problem, but it would seem the limit of EM transfer would be approaching zero, therefore any CO2 increase would cause a diminutive effect.
You are now probably enjoying the evening, but I hope you catch this.

      • squid2112 says:

And at 15u, what exactly would the temperature of that “down-welling” IR be? ..hmmmm?

Aside from the the tiniest, remotest portions of the Antarctic in the winter time, there isn’t a place on the planet that could absorb such “down-welling” IR … as in –> A cooler object CANNOT make a warmer object warmer still … case closed…

      • The saturation happens at such a low elevation, the pressure doesn’t much matter. Mean free path length of 15u at sea level is only around 30 meters, so the elevation of extinction is only a couple hundred feet or so.

        • Gail Combs says:

Dr. Will Happer agreed with what Dr Brown and Peter Malcombe that the time to radiate is about ten times slower than the time to the next collision in the lower troposphere. Dr Happer in his lecture also answered my question about where CO2 energy is radiated instead of being handed off via collision. Experimental data shows barely any radiation at 11 KM and that radiating is taking place in the stratosphere ~ 47 KM above the surface and above.

Considering any downward radiation runs into the same “radiate being about ten times slower than the time to the next collision in the troposphere” problem, all that happens is the troposphere around 11 KM gets a little ‘hotter’ theoretically. (This is that tropical hot spot that is missing in action) However there are other climate mechanisms in affect so the wind speed might increase a tad. (The missing in action extreme weather.)

The big problem for the warmists is the climate does not hinge on the concentrations of CO2 and the affect of CO2 increase especially that attributable to mankind (3 to 4 ppm) is so vanishingly small as to be completely unmeasurable. It is not even a tempest in a teapot. More a zephyr in a thimble.

So you do what Lord Monckton does. Use their suppositions plus actual experimental data and prove they are shouting fire on a rocky mountain top above timberline in a blizzard because they saw someone fire up a cigarette lighter.

Their Climate models flunk the reality test because:
#1. they have not correctly identified and quantified ALL the known unknowns and the unknown unknowns of the earth’s climate.

          #2. The climate is chaotic.

ALL the energy on earth comes from the sun (plus a bit of geothermal) so climate is all about how that energy is absorbed and how it travels. The earth has several means of dealing with that energy. Water and Wind being among the biggest not wimpy CO2.

        • darrylb says:

Gail, Morgan–thanks, I needed that-but I have to verify the figures a bit more. I must assume that Dr. Happer’s would be more accurate than those of Brown and Malcombe; however, the concept is the same. (Gail, you did say x orders of magnitude difference between time of travel and time of emission) I need to check the source of the data at various altitudes.
I am in a debate with a few college Profs who teach the subject.
They rely mostly on short periods of physical change to which my reply is- of course.
So they want to debate several chapters of IPCC working group 1, while I really am most interested in the one chapter causation.
They have surprisingly little knowledge of the physics involved — very few people do, and I keep learning. Reading the new book by Judith Curry and the Russian Vitaly (sp?) now. I believe that therein lies at least some of the unknowns. It is long, expensive
($64.30) on my kindle and somewhat rigorous (at least for me)
If one has the background, I would recommend it.

That picture looks to me like most of Greenland had low level stratus covering the ice with some gaps in NE Greenland and central Southern Greenland. The stratus has only formed over the ice above a certain altitude. Again, my guess would be above the 0° isotherm of the air mass covering the island (an anticyclone?).

    2. Neutrons attract other neutrons

[In fact stars make and discard Hydrogen and atomic bombs explode because neutrons repel neutrons]

The falsehoods were designed to prevent public knowledge of the source of energy that destroyed Hiroshima [2].

Why? An almost complete “black-out” of news on the CHAOS & FEAR of nuclear annihilation that followed Stalin’s capture of Japan’s atomic bomb plant at Konan, Korea in late August 1945 [3] left the public in the West unaware that Stalin:

    1. Emerged victorious from WWII, and
    2. Established the UN on 24 Oct 1945 to expand totalitarian control globally [4].

We face a formidable opponent who will be defeated because ultimately, “Truth is victorious, never untruth!”
