My apartment is down to 50 degrees this morning. I am very comfortable wearing three layers now.
- Cheap Target Under Armour clone shirt ($13 vs $50)
- Fine wool knit shirt from the thrift shop $3
- Coarse wool knit sweater from the thrift shop $4
The White House press corps says President Obama keeps the Oval Office at 80 degrees.
We can’t drive our SUVs, and eat whatever we want, and keep our homes at 72 all the time, whether we live in the desert or the tundra, and keep consuming 25% of the world’s resources with just 4% of the world’s population, and expect the rest of the world to say you just go ahead. We’ll be fine. That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen.
– Barack Obama 2008
Ha! We were a balmy 51. My wife likes it cold when she sleeps. So we have not turned on the heat yet.
It actually reminds me of when I was a child and we were living in a 2 bedroom apartment. There was only an oil furnace in the living room for heat, so when you got up in the morning, you ran to it to get dressed!
Since I am an old fart now, I do not run. Just walk around as the cats hug my legs looking for warmth. 😉
I remember high school in England. My bedroom was often close to 0C when I woke up in the morning.
And we call those the “good old days”. 😉
I didn’t realize that you were one of the four Yorkshiremen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe1a1wHxTyo
You missed the “one-upmanship” over at WUWT. I dropped out when it got to 10 miles and the carrying of the siblings.
Which high school was that? Mine was the same. We scraped the windows (inside) to brush our teeth in cold water but that was after a 3 mile run and a cold shower.
John Mason High School in Abingdon. I was one of the first students there in the 1960’s
… with frost on the inside of the windows!
Yep, back in the ’50s and early ’60s winters tended to be fairly cold. Some people think we are going back there.
But remember the greens expect solar and wind only to supply us with energy and heat.
I am excited, it is almost thrity here and so I am going to be warm on my walk today.
On another note and oh so fitting. Headline , obummer is going to concentrate on climate warming the last two years of his administration to secure his legacy. History (if it can be wrenched away from the progressives) is really going to have a field day with that on. How fitting that he will be attached to the biggest global lie of our live time. Peolple will forget the promise of keeping their doctors, insurence, ect but how on earth are they going to explain the missing heat?
Prosperity, and ever survival for most people depends on abundant, available, and inexpensive energy. Odumbo is the biggest loser ever elected.
A friend, when a boy was asked by his teacher “Who freed the slaves” his answer was “James Watt.” much to the surprise of the teacher who was expecting Abraham Lincoln. He quoted ““When looms weave themselves, man’s slavery will end.” – Aristotle
He was sent to the principals office for discipline
James Watt was the Scottish engineer who made the breakthrough development of using a separate condenser that turned the extremely inefficient Newcomen engines into the steam engines that drove the industrial revolution.

Too bad that type of logical thinking is absent in todays schools and when it does pop up gets soundly squashed.
Without animal power and then mechanical power we would have 95% of the population doing backbreaking hard labor so a very few could live well.
Call the peasants serfs or slaves the enslavement is only a matter of degree.
The actual quote in English of Aristotle was:
if, in like manner, the shuttle would weave and the plectrum touch the lyre without a hand to guide them, chief workmen would not want servants, nor masters slaves.

We don’t have the heat on yet either. But I live in Phoenix and our lows are probably 20 degrees warmer than your highs.
Yea, my inlaws are a couple of hours west of you. And complaining about the 75 degree days. 😉
Total winter here in NY. Bitter cold.

and only costs a few pence a day to run.
When I lived in upstate New York in a house built in the 1700’s (no heat upstairs in the bedrooms and a door closing off the stairs) I used an electric blanket. It still could not combat the -30F nights so I tossed my down sleeping bag on top. Turn it on a 1/2 hour before bed time and wear long undies and wool socks to bed. A watch cap on the head really helps too.

I use an electric blanket – sheet , electric blanket – Duvet, we have a very cold house, no heating upstairs. The mattresses can get damp in winter so this keeps them dry. Not sure if this is true but read a mattress can hold 4 pints of water.
How do you keep your hands warm?
This is why in the Black Forest in Germany where I lived one winter, all the Hausfraus turn the bed coverings off the beds and air them out.
At least Jimmy Carter walked the walk…
Let Washington DC lead by example. When DC is run on 25% renewable energy (not including Hydro) without bankrupting the poor, then they can tell the rest of the country what to do.
DC has the entire US treasury to draw from. They could give away the store and the feds would pay for it. They paid for a coke sniffing addict for years, remember?
The White House press corps says President Obama keeps the Oval Office at 80 degrees
He would, he’s from Kenya and it’s bloody hot there all the time.
After 2 record setting snowfalls last weekend, we set a new record low last night, and I have turned on the furnace only for a system check 2 weeks ago. Down to 49 degrees in the house this morning, and with some sun it has rebounded to 54 so far. I have managed to stay warm, and keep my beer cold!
An important issue raised by Richard about the damp, home heating in places like Ireland and the UK is used to keep the dampness away and not just to keep it’s occupants warm and cozy, which has it’s own set of problems.. It gets cold and people have the ability to stay warm but the elements are fierce, once the dampness takes hold of a home, illness will follow. There was a politician in the UK last year who gave a reply to the price of energy going up, he said that people “should wear an extra jumper”. I’m an engineer and political logic makes no sense to me.
You can add North Carolina at least this year. My fungi had mold growing on it. We lost our heating/AC heat pump system and don’t have the money just yet to fix it. The mold can really wipe out the lungs of anyone with bad allergies.
So why hasn’t the EPA considered LESS heating and A/C = MORE Asthma? I can certainly present real life data that allergies ==> Asthma without heat & A/C based on personal experience!
I know you’re exactly right there Gail.. And there are lots of people who live in climates that are cold and damp during the winter, if their heating breaks down in this ‘warmest year ever’ they’ll still become exposed to the elements regardless of how much warm clothing they wear… We’ve solved all of these problems years ago and it’s a maintenance issue now, but in “a warming world” BS it’s all about preventing access to cheep and efficient energy to maintain these homes, well that’s how I see it as an engineering problem.
I live in an old renovated house in the country.. If I didn’t use heating it would quickly fall back to the state it was in before, cold and damp, plaster falling off the walls etc… I’ve seen this happen first hand when the elderly occupants of two homes next to mine died, their property was very quickly overgrown you wouldn’t believe how fast and you could see how destructive the damp was. both properties had to be demolished and rebuilt only after 7 years of being empty.
I ran my heat at my condo for about five minutes this morning. That is all I have used so far this season. My neighbors are keeping me warm apparently.
I’ve got enough clothes to keep warm till the pipes freeze, so what ?
The toilet seat, shower surround, and the bed is still cold. You’re playing their game.
Why ?
