This tweet is a classic example of the mental disorder of progressives.
Both traffic deaths and gun deaths are declining, and The Economist finds a way to turn it into a negative
You would think that writers at The Economist would have some basic English skills. Gun deaths did not pass vehicle deaths. The correct way to describe the trend is “traffic deaths fell below gun deaths”
The word pass implies acceleration.
so….looking at that…can we say white crime is down?
The only thing I can think of…is that 8 years ago so many people lost their jobs…that either the parents…or the kids could not find jobs…so there were less kids with cars to have accidents
What else, 8 year ago, could have happened to make kids suddenly have less accidents??
Or cars suddenly got safer, like if say, thousands of old cars that lack modern safety features were suddenly scrapped and replaced with new ones.
Actually, politicians have made cars less safe…
“According to the Brookings Institution, a 500-lb weight reduction of the average car increased annual highway fatalities by 2,200-3,900 and serious injuries by 11,000 to 19,500 per year. USA Today found that 7,700 deaths occurred for every mile per gallon gained in fuel economy standards. Smaller cars accounted for up to 12,144 deaths in 1997, 37% of all vehicle fatalities for that year.
How many deaths have resulted? Depending on which study you choose, the total ranges from 41,600 to 124,800. To that figure we can add between 352,000 and 624,000 people suffering serious injuries, including being crippled for life. In the past thirty years, fuel standards have become one of the major causes of death and misery in the United States — and one almost completely attributable to human stupidity and shortsightedness.”
I don’t think the Economist meant to say that up until 8 years ago…kids were doing a lot better, had jobs, and could afford cars………
The number one cause of death among young blacks, 18-24, is homocide, more than all other causes combined.
.
Gangs account for half of all homicides in the US, and 90% in some areas.
And directly attributable to LBJ’s “Great Society” along the liberal and Progressive policies that have turned the urban hellholes of Chicago, Detroit, Philly, LA and the rest (that Democrats have run for 50 to 100 years) into 3rd world war zones with gangs and government replacing family and religion. Jobs are replaced with subsistence hand outs, dependence and despondency follow and the people they are “helping” spiral into despair. Someone with no hope and no future has no need of morals or a need to act in a civilized manner. The Progressives then feed on the misery, using it to create propaganda to insure the failed government policies an even wider spread. Resistance is futile.
(Yes, I know the phrase “gangs and governments” is redundant.)
This is how climatologists speak. It’s called SPIN.
If we have ever learned anything about human nature, prohibition was one of the most instructive. We actually modified the constitution with the addition of a prohibition amendment.
Predictably, alcohol was at the center of a new crime so immense that we added a new amendment which abolished the abolishment. (sic) As expected, only the most law abiding citizen’s ceased to have alcohol during the prohibition years.
Then and now, alcohol causes a much greater magnitude of deaths as well as other sad health issues then does the use of guns. Criminals will always have guns, just as they do in other countries in which gun ownership is not allowed.
As the song goes,—-‘When will they ever learn? When will they ever—–
Not only lacking basic English skills, but logic and math are deficient, too.
The term for that condition is “ignorant savage barbarian.”
Of course they throw in suicides and criminals getting their just deserts to inflate the figures.
I think the forecast is a load of crap. The actual figures are probably about right through 2014, comparing them to information I gathered from the internet. Left unsaid is the fact that a large majority of gun victims, as high as 75%, were blacks. Ninety percent of those were killed by other blacks, i.e., gang members using handguns. Another 13 percent involved mostly latino gangs. It is the gang culture that has been popularized among those kids that is the cause of all this violence.
If the Democrat machine governments and the union-backed cops of the big cities where those kids live were to get serious about the gangs , that figure would plummet and we would have one of the lowest gun death figures per capita in the world.
That said, one thing to notice about the chart is that the number of gun deaths has fallen by 50 percent since 1993 and is likely to decline further. This is true of all violent gun deaths in the U.S., not just for this age group. Meanwhile, motor vehicle deaths have only declined by about a fifth, which makes me want to research that age group further to see if the numbers were played with, but not right now.
I just noticed that the chart was produced by the Center for American Progress. This really makes me doubt the automotive deaths part. Great progressive organization funded by Soros money.
They accidentally clicked publish before adjusting for TOBS. Traffic and gun deaths are actually spiraling out of control.
More correct to say, “We predict that traffic deaths might fall below gun deaths.”
Year on year random variation is high for these statistics, they have no idea what will happen.
Correction required:
“Guns will surpass cars this year as the leading killer of black under 25s in America.”
There fixed it.
Not likely.
Gun death rates for black males most likely passed vehicle death rates at least 20-30 years ago, and will stay that way. If anyone can provide statistics to dispute this I would be interested in viewing them.
The graph is worthless, confined to prime crime gang age group, and should be broken down by race, ethnicity and sex as well as age. Death rates of this type should be further broken down by type– accidental, crime victim, and shot during the commission of a crime, for example. The straight line projection is also unrealistic. In short, a pathetic failed attempt at political propaganda.
How to lie with statistics? Give me the agenda you want to push and I will supply you the charts to back you up. Only the ignorant will take this graphic to be of any information value. I’m referring to the gullible types reflected in the stats on “favorites and retweets” at the bottom of the tweeted graphic.
Sorry, I mistook the data as rates, rather than raw numbers. That’s another problem with this garbage graph.
The appropriate line might be one I heard a long time ago.
‘Figures don’t lie, but liars figure!’
At the current rate, by 2050, automobile accidents will be causing nearly 1000 people aged 15-24 to spontaneous come back to life every year!
By 2050 the government will have them all on bicycles. I won’t be here to go through that period of adjustment, thank God. Also, the coming LIA may have killed off half of them. That should reduce the mayhem somewhat.
There comparing death by accident with death the criminal activity.
Peanuts to ternips.
Should some people get their way, driving a car would be criminal activity.
If so, I will lose my livelihood and who will support me? On a positive note, I don’t eat much, but I will need a fast internet connection….
Traffic deaths are down due to the recession keeping people off the road. young people have more accidents and young people have been hit much harder by the bad economy so it is quite reasonable that their traffic deaths would be dropping. Until the economy improves it should continue dropping or level off.

HEH, shoulda known the chart was fantasy. Data from the CDC:
http://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/usa-cause-of-death-by-age-and-gender
shows 15-24 has about 2000 for highway and less than 700 for ALL HOMICIDES!!!!
Apparently they are also counting SUICIDES and accidents and near misses in the gun deaths.
Confirmation, again that “Figures don’t lie, but liars sure figure!”
As the inner cities account for half or more than half of gun deaths, gun control of the inner cities is killing people. Eliminating the inner cities would put guns down below 3, still significantly below cars.
I guess, as car deaths includes accidents, gun accidents should be included, but should suicides in either class of deaths?
