US air was much cleaner when Malia was four years old in 2002, than when her father was four years old in 1965. The biggest pollutant she faced was smoke from her father’s cigarettes.

A landmark legal case is being heard in The Hague on Tuesday in which 886 Dutch citizens are taking the government to court for not doing enough to avoid climate change.

    • Robertv says:

Campaigners in the Netherlands are taking the government to court for allegedly failing to protect its citizens from climate change.

The class action lawsuit, involving almost 900 citizens, aims to force the government to cut emissions faster.

The first hearing opened in the Hague on Tuesday.

It is said to be the first time in Europe that citizens have tried to hold a state responsible for alleged inaction on climate change.

It is also believed to be the first case in the world in which human rights are used – alongside domestic law – as a legal basis to protect citizens against climate change.

The campaigners, led by the Urgenda Foundation, want the judges to compel the Dutch government to reduce its carbon emissions to 40% below 1990s levels by 2020.

The activists also want the court to declare that global warming of more than 2C will lead to a violation of fundamental human rights worldwide.

Among the plaintiffs is Joos Ockels, wife of the late astronaut Wubbo Ockels, along with DJ Gregor Salto and Nasa climate scientist Prof James Hansen.

“Everybody is waiting for the government to take action but the government has done so little. If the case succeeds, they will be forced to take action,” Salto told the UK’s Guardian newspaper.

The EU has pledged to cut emissions by 40% by 2030, while the US promised last month to reduce its carbon emissions 26-28% by 2025.

However, analysts say the pledges being made ahead of a global deal in Paris in December are not strong enough to stop temperatures rising above the internationally agreed maximum of 2C.

The 2C target was acknowledged at the UN climate convention (UNFCCC) in 2009 as the threshold of dangerous climate change, which scientists say is largely caused by the use of fossil fuels.

Sceptics say the threat from climate change is exaggerated.

Commentators say it remains to be seen whether the Dutch court is able and willing to rule on an issue that is still the subject of scientific debate.

However, Jaap Spier, Advocate-General to the Dutch Supreme Court, was quoted by the newspaper Trouw earlier in April saying that courts could force countries to adopt “effective climate policies”.

  3. Elaine Supkis says:

The Chinese are wearing heavy coats which means it is cold and foggy. In Asia, lots of people wear masks in winter due to fear of the flu. They do this in Japan a lot, for example.

    • Neal S says:

I’ve heard from people that have come back from Beijing China in the past couple of years, that there is a lot of something other than fog around there. While there may well at times be fog, there is certainly a lot more than just fog there.

I still contend it is the company they keep, their peers…

Recently, a major, federally-funded research project looked for allergy producing substances in the homes of several hundred children with asthma living in several major cities across the United States. Specifically, they measured the amount of cat, dust mite, and cockroach allergen in the bedrooms of these children aged 4 to 9 years. The results were quite striking.

Cockroach debris is an powerful allergen.

Why not relocate all cockroaches to D.C.?

Donna and Barbara, I have seen your comments in recent threads, but don’t I recall any in the

So, if you are new here Welcome!

How did the smoke from her father’s joints and snorts affect Malia?

I’m not sure that by taking bikes we will modify climate…. It has been proved that you can change climate easily, by starting an action on the ocean, which is a big factor in the climate change: http://www.1ocean-1climate.com/how-to-change-climate.php. Unfortunately, oceans weren’t discussed as much as they should have been when discussing the topic of global warming, but I trust that more and more people will start to realize that the climate is the continuation of oceans by other means.

What happened to Gail? Did her computer die, she was complaining about it….sorry to miss her.

    • Disillusioned says:

I noticed early last week she was conspicuously absent – went from prolific postings to zip. I hope all is well with her and her hubby.

    • Shazaam says:

It is springtime, so Gail is likely very busy. I have a herd of surplus computers and I’d send her one if she was off the air for hardware reasons.

Unfortunately we don’t communicate at that level (phone vs. internet)

      • Gail Combs says:

It is spring and we have to shift out herds to summer pasture without colic or bloat from too much green grass, fix fences, kill fire ants, shear sheep, wash the equines (Fungus amongus and an itching shedding coat…) spray weeds….
        ……

        Back to Obummer and Asthma.
This topic really burns me because of THIS:
        EPA Bans CFC-Based Asthma Inhalers

“The EPA has banned over-the-counter asthma inhalers as part of an agreement with other nations to avoid using chlorofluorocarbons, a substance once used in aerosol sprays. Alternative albuterol inhalers cost almost three times as much as the $20 epinephrine inhalers sold by online retailers.”

        Alternate: https://cei.org/blog/epa-attack-asthmatics-coming-end

I wonder how many people in the USA have died/been hospitalized because cheap OTC inhalers are not available and because A/C is now very expensive. I am stuck having to wear a mask most of the time because I ended up with asthma for the first time in my life.
CAUSE? No A/C plus to much humidity ====> mold. I have spent the winter trying to breath while cleaning the entire house plus contents… Grumble.

        • Gail Combs says:

          A side comment on allergies.
If you get itchy eyes, I have found a bit of petroleum jelly on the eyelid and around the eye works wonders especially when applied before going out to shed out the horses, handle the sheep and goats or mow grass.

Turns out Malia has a peanut allergy. The so called asthma attack was at a circus. Naaaaah, couldn’t be. Who ever heard of peanuts at a circus…
