  2. Bruce of Newcastle says:

I have no idea what caused the explosion but that it started with a fire makes me think it was ammonium nitrate. I haven’t heard of a cyanide blast like that, despite it being used in the Aussie gold industry in large amounts. On the other hand fairly recently we had something like the Tianjin blast in Queensland where a truck carrying NH4NO3 to a minesite caught fire. When the load heated past the detonation point it destroyed a reinforced concrete highway bridge like it was made of paper.

  3. Windsong says:

Impressive video of the blast from the DM link! My limited exposure (training only) in the military to tactical nukes is from many years ago. But a quick refresher on nuclear blast damage in wiki and all the damage photos leads me to guess that blast was equivalent to a 2 or 3 KT tactical nuke. I will defer to anyone who went through Ft. Sill that wants to call it larger or smaller.

  4. tobyglyn says:

21KT!!?? Twenty thousand tonnes of TNT!!? Sounds like rubbish to me. Do you have a credible link?

BBC is reporting a vastly lower number:

    “How big were the explosions?

The China Earthquake Networks Centre said the initial explosion in the city with the population of nearly 7.5 million had a power equivalent to three tonnes of TNT detonating, while the second was the equivalent of 21 tonnes.”

  5. Scott M says:

City that most have never heard of with a population of 7.5 million. I was there in 2010 on my way to Bejing, thought it was a minor suburb…:)

What’s the pope got to do with the explosion in China?

    • Bruce of Newcastle says:

Papal encyclical advocates totalitarian control of the world economy. China practices near totalitarian control of its economy (with limited success). Kaboom. Therefore expecting the climateers to run the world on unicorn flatus and ecocrucifixes is probably unwise.

  7. SMS says:

Venezuela is on the verge of total collapse because of socialism. They can’t even supply toilet paper to their citizens.

China didn’t start to grow any wealth until it adopted a few capitalistic practices. It’s citizens were starving before it’s ruling politicians decided communism was a complete failure.

Citizens get paid $25/month in Cuba and there has been no wealth creation in the years since Castro took over. Russia collapsed under the weight of communistic practices. Wherever practiced, socialism and communism fail it’s citizens.

Is there anyplace where socialism is successful? Maybe in Bernie Sanders and the Popes imaginations.

Yet capitalism continues to produce greater wealth for it’s citizens and our government continues to weaken this country’s ability to create wealth by moving it ever closer to socialism.

Democrats are socialists like Bernie Sanders. Bernie just tells the truth.

  8. R. de Haan says:

Come on people, bigger city, bigger harbor, bigger need for supplies, including hazardous stocks and as we know industrial plants, depots, storage facilities, transportation facilities have the risk to create havoc all over the World and the do.
Remember the Buncefield disaster in the UK, the exploding oil and LPG trains in Canada and the US, the LPG storage facility in Mexico, the Alpha Piper Drilling Rig Fire in the Northe Sea, just to mention a few.
We don’t call hazardous products hazardous for nothing.
All we can do is to do our stinking best to keep matters in check but some times it goes wrong. Just like in Aviation, an investigation takes place, we try to learn from mistakes made and continue.

The only worst alternative is that of the totally insane Green Doctrine that wants humanity to shrink, stop flying, stop driving cars, stop eating meat, stop consuming,……stop living.

    • Justa Joe says:

I think that the problem is the exacerbated by the lack of accountability of totalitarian communist/socialist regimes. As you see the Chi-Coms of the PRC aren’t even letting their people know what chemicals were involved in the disaster.

      • R. de Haan says:

Don’t worry, most of the bad stuff is burned anyhow.

Besides that, can you mention one single chemical or petrol chemical disaster that took place in the USA where within 24 hours after the disaster lists of dangerous chemicals were issued to warn the public?

The USA doesn’t even warn their own military.
Agent Orange, Veteran Disease, Ammo dipped in depleted Uranium…

        Don’t make me laugh.

        • Justa Joe says:

C’mon, the record of the USSR & PRC regarding protecting their subjects from environmental issues has been abysmal. There is no way for the communist subjects to push back against the state.

      • R. de Haan says:

What can we learn from the pictures illustrating the aftermath this disaster:

        1. Stacked containers, even empty ones, create perfect blast protection.
        2. No home or office should have windows without foil lamination preferably inside and out. Prevents high velocity broken glass from injuring and killing people.

Just watch the pictures and you will see what I mean.

  9. brian says:

not defending the chinese but this has happened in the US before. my partner was involved in the forensics of trying to identify the center of explosion using video and photos. that was the pepcon disaster in the late 80’s in henderson nevada. That was likely a combination of missile fuel and a leaking underground gas pipeline.
