Man-Made Sea Level Rise

In 1988, NASA’s James Hansen told the US Senate that global warming had begun.

He said Lower Manhattan would be underwater by 2018 and that you wouldn’t be able to get a glass of water in New York restaurants because of the permanent drought.

NOAA issued six different “scenarios” for sea level rise.

Lower Manhattan is below the “Low Scenario” and sea level is rising there at the same rate it was 150 years ago.

One thousand years ago, King Knut took his subjects to the sea to show them that government doesn’t control sea level.  Unfortunately we don’t have politicians that intelligent any more.

Hansen was correct about one thing however.  You can’t get a glass of water in a Manhattan restaurant any more.

The only thing more scientific than 6 different scenarios for a single theory
is when the real result is outside of the scale of the 6 scenarios.

AGW should really switch to voodoo and fortune telling to get better results

I still read stuff about warming and how coastal cities will be underwater and millions will need to relocate. Like covid, it’s about controlling people. Sad that so many can’t think for themselves and see this.

The Salon article misquoted Hansen (which is unsurprising for that sorry rag). Hansen actually predicted that in forty years (not twenty) NYC’s “West Side Highway will be under water.”

It was 1988 when he said it. Here’s an article:

    https://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/10/22/a-little-known-but-failed-20-year-old-climate-change-prediction-by-dr-james-hansen/

Hansen was still laughably wrong. 33 (82%) of those 40 years have elapsed, and sea-level at NYC has risen only by about 3½ inches, about half of which is due to local land subsidence, not a rise of the oceans. The “West Side Highway” (Henry Hudson Parkway) is still ≈10 feet above sea-level.

The longest NYC sea-level measurement record is from the tide gauge at The Battery [station info], in Manhattan. Subsidence there is more rapid than is typical in the region.

The second-longest high-quality sea-level measurement record for NYC is the combined record from Kings Point at the Merchant Marine Academy [station info] and the retired Willets Point tide gauge at the U.S. Coast Guard Pier [station info], in Queens. The measured sea-level trend there is 1.0 mm/year less than The Battery’s trend.

The higher rate of subsidence at Battery Park is probably due to a combination of at least two factors: settling of reclaimed/landfill land, and because they built a lot of tall, heavy buildings in Manhattan, neither of which have anything to do with anthropogenic global warming or CO2.

Here’s the average of the two sets of measurements:

Sea-level rise is more rapid at NYC than most other places, but, as is the case at most other long measurement sites, the rate of sea-level rise at NYC has not significantly accelerated since the 1920s.

I love freedom of the press, guaranteed by our Constitution.
Keep in mind that plummeting readership and advert revenues have forced the NYTimes to lay off 90 percent of the people they had on staff compared to year 2000. Worse, several of the newbies they hired as replacements — presumably at a lower salary, because inexperienced — were revealed to be Spectacular LIARS. Since 2000, several series of interviews and articles by NYT “journalists” turned out to be entirely invented, with fictional characters and fabricated conversations and details.

    • David March says:

Guess which famous New York daily leads the pack of failing traditional “News” organizations that have repeatedly demanded that government tax internet use by the public, and use the proceeds to subsidize the traditional News. No money to the amateurs and non-professionals… “They can’t be trusted.”
      Yeah, right.
