Tropical Midwest

“Virtually no idea is too ridiculous to be accepted, even by very intelligent and highly educated people, if it provides a way for them to feel special and important. Some confuse that feeling with idealism.”

― Thomas Sowell

Experts say that burning fossil fuels will make the Midwest climate tropical by the year 2500.

This is similar to the forecast made by Greta’s ancestor Arrhenius over a century ago.

Experts also said we would quickly run out of fossil fuels and replace them wind and solar power.

When will fossil fuels run out? | Octopus Energy

It isn’t clear how we quickly run out of fossil fuels and keep burning them until the year 2500 – but we already know what life is like on earth at much higher and lower levels of CO2. The greatest expansion of life on Earth occurred 540 million years ago, when CO2 was at its peak. Atmospheric CO2 levels were more than 15 times higher than they are now. Corals and shellfish evolved during that time.  If ocean acidification was a real problem, there would have been no sea life, rather than a massive expansion of life in the oceans..

The reason we have coal beds, is because there used to be a lot more atmospheric CO2, which made earth very green.  This greenery turned into thick peat beds, which turned into coal.

According to the National Climate Assessment, peak temperatures in the Midwest have plummeted over the past century.

    To paraphrase Sowells quote
” Once you mastered the rhetorical trick of how to appeal to the Machiavellian, psychopathical and narcissistic tendencies of intellectuals by disguising those as benevolent virtues they are easier to control than any other group.”

Concerning the explosion of marine life during the Ordovician and Silurian periods (488 to 416 mya) here in my state of Indiana. Of course during that time The hunk of land we call Indiana was in the tropical zone and for most of the period under a shallow sea. Sea level rose through most of the Ordovician and then in the late Ordovician is fell as a period of glaciation occurred dropping global sea levels and resulting in a mass extinction event which marks the .

Ordovician bedrock is exposed in the SE corner of the state. Versailles state park lies right on the edge of the what is called the Cincinnati arch where Ordovician and Silurian bedrock facies meet and are exposed. In the park along Fallen Timbers Creek is a place where the water has cut down through the Silurian bedrock to the middle and late Ordovician and so fossils from both periods are exposed in the punky limestone.

The numbers and different types of fossils are astounding. You can’t look at a rock without seeing a fossil. And they are easy to access too because the limestone is very soft and punky one can stand on on the slope and just pick clean fossils out of it. Coral and brachiopod (early bivalves) abound. The most distinctive of the fossils I have found are the horn corals and brachopods, but there should be Sea Stars, Nautiloid, and trilobites there also.

My family camped at Versailles several times as a kid 7-13 years old and that was my introduction to natural history. I always visited “fossil island” as we called it when we camped there. Since then I have taken my wife down to that place.

Hawking was a mathematician. But not even the greatest supercomputers we have today can make predictions on climate. Oh well I suppose listening to Hawking was slightly more credible than listening to a child who is afraid of bogeymen under the bed.

Some suggest that it wasn’t even Hawking “speaking” through is computer but rather, his handlers. How would we know? Maybe he was just a brand in a marketing campaign?

      • rah says:

That is what I believe. That statement came shortly before his death and I would not put it past them to use his name to promote their cause.

Given how much has happened between 2019 and 2021, I would say that climate change in the year 2500 is almost a luxury problem to be dealing with … we are going to face a lot worse than that, and a lot sooner. Right now, almost all of our problems are political.

But anyone who enjoys worrying about long term challenges should consider, the way bioengineering and transhumansim are underway … humans could be ALIEN to humans by 2500. That’s presuming we manage to put down the mechanical uprising which should be due around 2100, otherwise all bets are off.
