    Ooh, cool!

Fossicked in Lightning Ridge and Andamooka when we were kids. The black opals were fire in a gemstone. We only found a few, but had a lot of fun doing so. It’s amazing that they don’t actually have any color – it’s all to do with diffraction by planar hydrated SiO2 crystals, like a butterfly’s wings.
