There is a lot of ice in the Beaufort Sea north of Alaska, Yukon and Northwest Territories, with cold weather in the forecast for the next two weeks. In order to get a big melt this summer, conditions will have to change significantly over the next two weeks.

These maps, color coded to represent the depth of the Arctic ice, do show a decrease in the really deep (red) ice from 2007 to now, but an increase in the next level (yellow). Is there an integrated volume of Arctic Sea ice anywhere for each year?
Wind has a lot to do with both thickness and volume. If a storm lands in the right place, ice can be forced into warmer water in a hurry where it can melt, or if ice ends up being forced in a colder area it can pile up, thus thicker. The fact is the Arctic is colder than normal this summer, and Antarctica had a record cold 6 month period recently. Not a word about any of this from the media. Climate is now the new pandemic.

When dealing with somebody who deludes themselves that they are Napoleon, it is advisable to give the impression of agreeing with every word they say, while surreptitiously hiding the cutlery.
The Northern Sea Route along Russia’s coast also has a lot of ice hanging around. In the linked article it mentions the ice strengthened Yamal-class LNG carrier requiring ice breaking assistance for a portion of its trip earlier this summer. The older tankers require the new nuclear powered Sibir for ice breaking assistance. Winter came early last fall; summer came came late this year.
