“Dam across the Bering Straits?”

“LOS ANGELES (UPI) President Ford and Soviet leaders may discuss at their Nov. 23-24 1974 Vladisvostok conference damming the Bering Straits between Alaska and Siberia to warm the earth’s climate, a former Pentagon think-tank analyst said Tuesday,

Lowell Ponte, a former arms technologist turned columnist, said such a project has been under discussion between the two countries since 1972.

Ponte said the earth’s climate is cooling at a rapid rate and may be headed into another ice age which could over-cool the planet’s arable land and bring starvation to millions.”

Some scientists believe the earth is cooling and heading into another Ice Age. Specialists in a separate part of the scientific community see the Bering Strait as the “thermostat” of the world.

A former Pentagon “think tank” research consultant turned journalist has dovetailed the two ideas.

Lowell Ponte of Los Angeles says damming the Bering Strait across its 56-mile wide mouth between Siberia and Alaska could change the cold and warm climates sufficiently to control earth’s climate and reverse a trend of crowns which burden people in need of food.

More than two years ago, physicist Clyde Cowen, then at Catholic University in Washington and co-discoverer of the neutrino — the suallest particle of an atom — suggested such a dam to the government.

It was noted by climatologists that the earth began a cooling period about the 15th Century. It was not until about 1890 that the earth warmed up significantly. And during a period of little more than 50 years — until about 1945 — crops became more abundant and the world’s population more than doubled.

After about 1949, the cooling was noticeable again Alexander noted that the total drop since the 1940s has. been about 2.7 degrees. While the change seems small, the effects have been dramatic to farmers and fishermen.

1974: “Specialists in a separate part of the scientific community see the Bering Strait as the “thermostat” of the world.”

2010: “A study by GISS climate scientists recently published in the journal Science shows that atmospheric CO2 operates as a thermostat to control the temperature of Earth.” (From NASA.)

I love following the science. Who knows what the next Thermostat for the Earth will be? Unsurprisingly, no one considers the possibility that humans are pretty much just along for the ride on Earth as far as the climate is concerned, and that Earth’s climate is cycles within cycles within cycles. Who would fund climate “science” to the tune of uncountable billions of dollars if it turns out that there is no “thermostat”?

My guess is that the 1st thermostat in the Bering Straits went broke
      and was replaced by Co2.
James Hansen,Paul Ehrlich and Michael Mann were responsible for the installation as Co2 works as well as all other things they came up with = 0.

But in defense of the Bering Straits thermostat it may be fair to mention that it may have worked several times,
as it is considered to have played several a role during massive sudden climatic shifts known as Dansgard – Oeschger events, which seem to have turned Greenland, well, green, several times .
(the almighty Co2 on the other hand, did what it always does and played no rule during these events that happened in the picture perfect > 350 ppm era )

In a time where a little bit of non existing Sweetwater from the non existing arctic sea ice is supposed to stop the flow of oceanic streams, it seems a bit odd to waste so much money when an iceberg could do the same job 🙂

It is also interesting that such a huge solution has always only positive results – no matter in which era we live in.
Humanity is always blessed with scientists who always know about the positive.
No worries that such a massive interference,by shutting down the flow between arctic and pacific could result in a massive disruptions in the conveyor belt which could take many years to restructure and stabilize those streams.

Another very interesting thing is that soviet scientist in the 1950ies already considered this as a solution.
Which means that the now cancelled global cooling period was very well known around the world and that the current bounce back towards normal temperatures
is deliberately sold to people under the wrong and fake label of global warming.

  3. Russell Cook says:

…. all the while the Al Gore sycophants are telling us the global cooling craze ‘stems entirely from one single Newsweek magazine article.’

Excellent find by Tony, I’ll be using the screen images here (I’ve used Tony’s images before this way) in my upcoming dissection of the days-old “Chicago v BP” lawsuit at my GelbspanFiles.com blog. That case is the latest thrown on the pile of “ExxonKnew” lawsuits, despite how it’s increasingly obvious there’s no way Exxon could’ve known back in the ’70s that burning fossil fuels causes CAGW – “w” as in WARMING!

    • arn says:

The lie about the single Newsweek ice age article is not a simple Al Gore lie from a guy with a Bachelor of Arts.

It comes from the very top of scientific competence – the Bolshevik Globalist – formerly known as Scientific American.
While Tony alone was able to find so many ice age articles that he needs 2 archive sections on his website ,
this bastion of science was only able to find one.

Funny note – I remember that tony posted here several years ago 2 articles from 1982 or 1983.
Both from the same year and same news outlet.
One about global cooling will gonna kill us all and just a few month later another about how global warming will do the same.
And I’m pretty sure it was Newsweek.

      • Russell Cook says:

Good ol’ anti-science “Scientific American.” I’m old enough to remember when they actually followed the science, unexciting as that pursuit mostly was back in the day.

For the longest time, I thought the transition time from cooling to warming was when Gore popped up in association with James Hanson and his summer of ’88 Senate hearing. But as I pointed out here http://gelbspanfiles.com/?p=15371 (reproduced as a guest post at WUWT https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/04/22/for-earth-day-the-1983-wgbh-episode-of-nova-the-climate-crisis-the-greenhouse-effect/ ), the PBS Nova show had a 1983 episode about the greenhouse effect — what creeped me out about that one was that the only thing it was lacking on being exactly what we hear today was the smear of skeptic scientists as ‘industry-paid shills.’ So it is possible that some magazine way back then did some kind of switcheroo from cooling to warming and hoped its readers didn’t wonder about it ….

    • arn says:

The reason why there was a lack of smear of sceptic scientists is not that these guys were nicer or less aggressive back then,
but a simple fact that in 1983 global warming was the new kid in town .In its infancy and the corpse of their ice age lie still warm.

They never start to scream from the start.
The first step is to slime around, kiss butts , ” we are here to help”,
to built up the narrative and gain trust(they did this with the gay/trans agenda, they did it with forced vaccines and every war ,)
once the narrative is established and they have enough power they show their true colors and everyone who disagrees is the devil,Putin,Trump and Hitler.

  4. Conrad Ziefle says:

This article makes me wonder if we already had reached 1984 in 1974.

    • arn says:

No – CiA Boss Casey said, iirc, in 1981 ,that “our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false ”

Therefore 1984 was still not a thing in 1981 and could not happen until Clintons telecommunication act of 1997 , which helped the Oligarchy to monopolize the Newsmedia.

In 2002 DARPAS information awareness office started with the official intention to track terrorists with a 200 mio dollar budget, therefore in the best Orwellian way they used the budget to create 300 mio dossiers on US citizens.,

Officially the Information awareness office ended in 2004 , but all relevant programs are still going on as Snowden has proven , and the most relevant started when IAO officially shut down – known as Facebook.
(Facebook that today started a series of ‘unexpected ‘ anomalies we will experience this year.
The next most prominent one will be Joe Biden )

I think the day Facebook wiped out the competition was the beginning of 1984.
And Obamas common core baked it into the school system.

  5. Trevor says:

I have noticed that the Sun seems to affect the temperature somewhat. I only started noticing this about 54 years ago as a very young child.

  6. Bob G says:

apparently climate change makes killer whales crave great white shark for lunch.
in the news today….”The lone-wolf style of the attack on the shark may be an adaptation caused by climate change. Orcas appear to have been getting more aggressive, with numerous reports in the past few years of the whales attacking ships. Some attacks seemed to have been out of vengeance.” after reading about this I’ve decided to stay out of the ocean. seems judicious since you don’t want to run into a killer whale having a bad day. lol

  7. A typical ivory tower academic approach. Obsess about your own limited sphere of knowledge and try to apply it to every problem you meet, rather than characterize all the problems which a course of action may bring and prioritize them in order of importance. There couldn’t possibly be any unforeseen consequences to building a bloody great dam in the Pacific ocean, quite apart from the fact that it addresses a problem that doesn’t exist. Rather like building windmills and solar farms, with zero concern for their actual environmental impact. Pure, blinkered ivory tower reasoning, divorced completely from reality.

  8. Bill says:

OT: Seems like I’ve read this story before, but are they as confident as they once were?

The Arctic could become ‘ice-free’ within a decade, say scientists

“For scientists, an ice-free Arctic doesn’t mean there would be zero ice in the water.

“Instead, researchers say the Arctic is ice-free when the ocean has less than 1 million square kilometers (386,000 square miles) of ice. The threshold represents less than 20% of what the region’s seasonal minimum ice cover was in the 1980s. In recent years, the Arctic Ocean had around 3.3 million square kilometers of sea ice area at its minimum in September.”

    • Disillusioned says:

Nice catch. There is more hedging in the article: “The good news: Arctic sea ice is resilient and can return quickly if the atmosphere cools down.”

Yeah, doesn’t sound as if they are all that confident about their overplayed climate tipping point nonsense they’ve been serving up (points of no return which we, perhaps, have already passed): https://www.cbsnews.com/news/climate-change-tipping-points-amazon-rainforest-antarctic-ice-gulf-stream/

    • arn says:

Dude must have watched Al Gores Fantasy Movie and got his mee -too moment that inspired to move the 2014 prediction 2 decades further (he even used the could).

And once they redefine an ice free arctic to 4 mio sq kilometers his prediction will be spot on.

    • I see, when real science doesn’t support your claims, re-define your terms, e.g.re-define the term vaccination to push a gene therapy treatment. Only a matter of time before falling thermometer readings are termed ‘warming’. Like Humpty Dumpty, change the meanings of words to suit your story. It didn’t end well for him.

  9. Scott Allen says:

I am old enough to remember when they wanted to take coal ash and spread it on the pole’s snow to warm them up.

Arn ……Facebook/Meta IS the US government. Darpa started a project call ‘Life Log” that was a way to track EVERYONE, the program intended to get people to self report their life. The government program was terminated but about 4 months later Mark Z started facebook.
