The Ultimate Global Warming Test

“Milton’s pressure has dropped an insane 50 mb in 10 hours. If this doesn’t convince you the climate crisis is upon us, I don’t know what will.”

Dr. Jennifer Francis, Rutgers University

The third deadliest US hurricane hit Lake Okeechobee, Florida in 1928. Barometric pressure dropped 55 mb in four hours when the storm passed Guadalupe.

From ABC news, 6pm on Monday:

“Hurricane Milton strengthened to a Category 5 storm on Monday as it takes aim at Florida’s west coast.

Landfall is expected as a Category 3 hurricane Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.”

    Try and find that headline.

  2. Peter Carroll says:

Is this “unprecedented” or “evidence of climate change’, or both or neither? I’m confused so I’m off to the pub. Works every time.

  3. Bob G says:

I thought voting for Obama solved the climate crisis? so now we have another climate crisis that can only be solved if we vote for Harris? makes sense if you’re a liberal…..

Bob, It’s like the vaccine, you have to keep doing it over and over to get the protection. To them, it’s like going to the church every Sunday to show God that you are a good person, and maybe he won’t let any bad thing happen to you. This is their form of doing that.

Not only is the pressure drop not unprecedented but they are massively lying about the wind speed as well.

Check out this recording of the hurricane hunter with the call sign TEAL71 as it traverses the eyewall 4 times on this flight right around the time of this tooth gnashing of “weather experts” on Monday evening.

    https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/TEAL71/history/20241007/2326Z

You can move the slider to see the altitude and ground speed at each ADS-B data return. Turn off the weather view from the menu at upper right, as the image is from the last ADS-B data point (and the satellite image has moved towards the east from the data points earlier).

Now some aeronautical knowledge is needed to interpret the data, which is any aircraft and especially this C130 Hercules has a maximum turbulent air speed, above which structural failure will occur in moderate to heavy turbulence. The plane flies at or below this “Va” speed. You can see via the ground speed data during portions of the flight well away from the storm center, this is roughly 245-255 mph. (ADS-B returns ground speed based on GPS)

Notice the first time it crosses the eyewall, it does a 360 degree turn and the ground speed rises to 351 mph, then sharply drops to 270 then back up to 345. We do not know precisely what the wind direction was as it executes this 360 degree turn, but it can be inferred that the drop in speed corresponds to passing into the eye, and the rises are in the eyewall. So the wind speed is in the range of 100 to perhaps 120 mph at flight level of 10,000 feet above sea level.

At each subsequent passage through the eyewall, which you can observe as the rise above and fall below Va speed, also shows the wind speed cannot be as reported of 185 mph at the time of this flight.

The hunters are designated TEAL71 and TEAL72. TEAL 72 is now entering the storm again at 8:00 AM Tuesday so we will see what it’s ADS-B returns denote.

Sounds exciting as hell. I think I would like to be in one of those planes doing that- one time, and one time only.
I guess overall, what we can take away from all of this information and from these events, is that, despite all of our knowledge, technology, and science, Earth is still a very dangerous place.
NOTE: Which is a take-off from one of my favorite books, which I recommend highly if you are into that kind of thing. It’s “Where is Everybody, 50 solutions to the Fermi Paradox”, by Stephen Webb. He has two chapters along that line:
The Galaxy is a Dangerous Place, and the Planetary System is a Dangerous Place.

Not wanting to immediately demean Francis’s intellect, I have to ask what her PhD is in. Typically, non-math based majors haven’t developed a strong sense of logic, and hence their native intelligence should not be immediately questioned when they say something stupid. We would, however, expect them to have developed a pretty good vocabulary, and at least to be able to look up the definitions of words before they use them. So I have to wonder how it is that she conflates a single hurricane with “climate”, being that “climate” is a term used to describe long term “mean” weather patterns.
In any case, her statement makes me want to know what her PhD is in, and from what university, so that I can safely avoid people with that degree and also those from that institution.
As far as, Morales goes, he may not be crazy, although I would top love to ask him which side of the debate he took. In the end, it seems he is telling us that he has seen the true god, and has become a witness for the religion of Climate Change.

  6. Laurie says:

There is indeed a crisis, but it’s not the climate…
