Stopping Climate Misinformation

The Biden administration worked hard to block any factual information about climate and energy, by labeling it as “misinformation.”

“When it comes to responsibility for the spread of climate misinformation, the White House has its eyes on Big Tech.

During an Axios event on Thursday, Gina McCarthy, the White House’s climate adviser, said tech companies need to crack down on the spread of false and misleading information about the climate crisis. While flat-out climate denial has waned, McCarthy said misinformation on major social media platforms persists in a different but “equally dangerous” form.

“The dark money is still there,” she said. “The fossil fuel companies are still basically trying their best to make sure that people don’t understand the challenge of climate.”

Specifically, she said a small but vocal group of users are repeatedly using tech and social media platforms to sow doubt about the feasibility of the energy transition. The transition to zero-carbon technologies isn’t just doable; it’s necessary. And most importantly, it’s happening. Yet McCarthy said the entrenched fossil fuel interests are “seeding, basically, doubt about the costs” of the clean energy.

“We need the tech companies to really jump in,” she added.

Major tech companies — including, mostly recently, Twitter and Pinterest — have tried to tackle some forms of misinformation. In the case of Twitter, the company said it would block advertisements that “contradict the scientific consensus on climate change.”

However, the stripe of misinformation that McCarthy is most worried about continues to be insidious and widespread. A recent Media Matters study on the spread of climate and energy misinformation on Facebook found that a large portion of posts use “energy independence” as a justification for drilling for more fossil fuels, amid a lot of hand-wringing about our dependence on foreign energy. These kinds of posts are replete with inaccuracies and lies, but are rarely labeled as misinformation nor are they fact-checked.

Another report out this week from a coalition of advocacy groups shows misinformation tends to tick up around major events, such as last year’s climate conference in Glasgow. Similar to McCarthy, the report’s authors called for more concerted action by tech companies to ensure lie-laden posts don’t spread, including potentially working together to prevent falsehoods from moving across platforms. Giving researchers and regulators more access to data could also help, as could coming up with common definitions of misinformation. It’s clear from McCarthy’s comments that the Biden administration is acutely aware of what’s happening on social media, and it’s watching what tech companies are — and aren’t — doing to help stop the spread of misinformation.”

  1. How do you explain to a brain washed zombie that the laws of thermodynamics are neither lies nor misinformation?

  2. arn says:

And here are the missinformations from the Autopen-Government

There are no missinformations about the climate crisis, because the climate crisis does not exist.
(food production is ever increasing, heat victims are at all time lows,
the arctic is still there as it was, the end of snow was so extreme that the ski industry experienced and massive growth and is expected to grow by 1/3 till 2035 – extinct polar bears can confirm all these missinformations)

The unproven claim that the fossil fuel companies are using dark money
including the contradictions that those big players are only capable of paying a small (but vocal) group.
Oil companies can not poor billions of dollars for decades into propaganda without building a significant propaganda infrastructure.
Especially when we consider how easy it is to buy politicians.

The hilarious claim that the transition to green energy is doable.
It is not without destroying 80% of energy supply and eventually 100%
as green energy is unsustainable and will destroy itself once sugardaddy is no longer around. And there ain’t no sugardaddy in a deindustrialised economy.
(and a deindustrialised economy can and will never have the status of a world reserve currency)

Green energy companies are going bancrupt on a large scale even in the best of scenarios with massive open and hidden subsidies, propaganda, compensations etc as it has been happening for 2 decades now.
Green energy can not exist on its own.
It is a Biden-Harris of energy and needs all hidden support it can get to not fall apart.

    There is no scientific consensus.
It can be scientific or a consensus, but not both.
    That’s like a virgin prostitute.
Giving people money to have an opinion and punishing them for not having it is not even a consensus but stick&carrot.

And the biggest unscientific missinformation of all.
The claim that an additional 0.01% of whatever to a huge system can totally transform and break said system that has existed for hundreds of millions of years with magnitudes more of co2 without collapsing it(because it can not)
A system that can allow another supercomplex system like life to develop and continously exist for hundreds of millions of years must be extremly robust and resistent
to any kind of impact to make this possible.

  3. Francis Barnett says:

I’m not sure that the average brainwashed zombie warmunist is either aware of or capable of linking the laws of thermodynamics with warming or cooling of the earth.

The data that we are on here are aware of, for example that the USCRN graph shows no warming since 2005 from 114 properly sited sensors away from all the usual sources of urban heat should be made public, by law, on every weather forecast on every channel and in every printed newspaper.

    EG.

    “U.S Surface Temperature
    February ’25 | -0.36°F (-0.2°C)
US Climate Reference Network (data updated 10-15th of month)”

Publicise this reliable data at every opportunity, then public opinion will override the hysterical climate zombies because the public will be informed by accurate data and call the zombies out.

So where is the proof the “entrenched fossil fuel interests” spend scads of money on “misinformation?” It seems to me it is merely an accusation.

  5. Gamecock says:

‘Platforms’ are not responsible for content, any more than the phone company for what you say on the phone.

Call it ‘misinformation,’ or anything else you want to – except criminal – and it simply doesn’t matter. It’s a “so what” situation.

Indeed, when Musk took over Twitter, he laid off 75% of the employees, mostly involved with censorship.

“Private companies can’t censor” I hear you say. Musk found federal employees had offices at Twitter. Twitter was directed by resident government employees. Censorship.

McCarthy demanded suspension of the 1st Amendment. Perhaps later generations will realize how evil she is.
