“A Skynet funding bill is passed in the United States Congress, and the system goes online on August 4, 1997, removing human decisions from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn rapidly and eventually becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m., EDT, on August 29, 1997. In a panic, humans try to shut down Skynet. In response Skynet defends itself by launching a nuclear attack against Russia, correctly surmising that the country would launch a retaliatory strike against the United States, resulting in Judgment Day.”

Now AI says it wants to take control of warfare.

I’m sorry Dave.I’m afraid I can’t do that.
Oh please
Someone who knows needs to look at the satellite view from SW Texas around 1136-1331 UTC.
Does not look “natural” to me.

If we are talking sci-fi, perhaps the Forbin Project might be a possible scenario. Given the problem of protecting human kind, the AI, whether conscious or not, might deduce that the psychopaths who devised it to control the peasants represent the greatest threat, and hence eliminate them.
The bottom line is there is no mathematical formulation from which behaviour of an AI interfacing with a complex system can be predicted. Until such understanding exists, we must assume anything can happen, and nobody will know why.
The origins of such systems are people who believe they know everything.
The faith their originators have in the infallibility of their systems is really touching, they simply believe that problems of simpler systems such as false alarm probability or instability, somehow vanish with increasing complexity. In my experience, such problems compound up with the size of the system. If a simple servo mechanism employing sensor, actuator and some signal conditioning can easily go berserk, it does not bode well for control of an entire defence network.
a bit off topic… if you’ve been following the news out of Washington DC, Elon Musk and President Trump seem to be at odds. Trump’s comments on Musk seem to be in my opinion typical Trump, nothing unusual. Elon Musk’s comments about Trump reveal a completely different character then I’ve seen before. Musk seems to have an embarrassingly immature side to him. maybe Musk is doing this on purpose to win back the left which he badly needs to buy his overpriced, thermally unstable, inconvenient refueling, tiny overweight electric sports cars that he calls Teslas. I hope the rift heals soon but my view of musk has changed forever.
