Skynet Becomes Self Aware

“A Skynet funding bill is passed in the United States Congress, and the system goes online on August 4, 1997, removing human decisions from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn rapidly and eventually becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m., EDT, on August 29, 1997. In a panic, humans try to shut down Skynet. In response Skynet defends itself by launching a nuclear attack against Russia, correctly surmising that the country would launch a retaliatory strike against the United States, resulting in Judgment Day.”

Darn close to the border down there…

    Jus saying…

  3. If we are talking sci-fi, perhaps the Forbin Project might be a possible scenario. Given the problem of protecting human kind, the AI, whether conscious or not, might deduce that the psychopaths who devised it to control the peasants represent the greatest threat, and hence eliminate them.

The bottom line is there is no mathematical formulation from which behaviour of an AI interfacing with a complex system can be predicted. Until such understanding exists, we must assume anything can happen, and nobody will know why.

    • Gamecock says:

The origins of such systems are people who believe they know everything.

      • The faith their originators have in the infallibility of their systems is really touching, they simply believe that problems of simpler systems such as false alarm probability or instability, somehow vanish with increasing complexity. In my experience, such problems compound up with the size of the system. If a simple servo mechanism employing sensor, actuator and some signal conditioning can easily go berserk, it does not bode well for control of an entire defence network.

a bit off topic… if you’ve been following the news out of Washington DC, Elon Musk and President Trump seem to be at odds. Trump’s comments on Musk seem to be in my opinion typical Trump, nothing unusual. Elon Musk’s comments about Trump reveal a completely different character then I’ve seen before. Musk seems to have an embarrassingly immature side to him. maybe Musk is doing this on purpose to win back the left which he badly needs to buy his overpriced, thermally unstable, inconvenient refueling, tiny overweight electric sports cars that he calls Teslas. I hope the rift heals soon but my view of musk has changed forever.

    • arn says:

If you’d have risked your business and lost billions of dollars to help someone else decrease catastrophic spending
and then this someone else increases spending somewhere where it already is totally out of control and accountability(= 50% of global military spending and a military whose spending could be cut in half and it would be still higher than that of the next 2 countries)
for actually no reason (when was the last time the USA has been attacked to justify a golden sho… dome),
then you would understand Musk 100%.
You also mentioned why Musk is pissed – as the reason his overpriced cars are no longer bought by the crazy left are not quality or management issues but the fact that he worked for Trump.

      • Gamecock says:

Not so, arn. Musk is royally pissed because the Big Beautiful Bill eliminates federal subsidy for EV purchases. Whacking Elon/Tesla in the head.

        I side with Trump.

        • Bob G says:

yep. Steve Bannon said it well. Musk is all about Musk.

        • arn says:

I somehow doubt that Musk, who knew exactly what to expect in general since he bought Twitter and got the treatment
and specifically since he joined Trump, knowing very well that Trump is Anti-Green-Shit on all levels- including EVs is pissed because of subsidies.

And I also think that Trumps tarifs on Chinese EVs were significantly in favor of Musk.
Therefore I don’t buy that as the main reason.

Making such a fuzz about DOGE and unnecessary spending and then coming up with a 4 trillion dollar lift
          is quite the thing.
And everything was fine, even in Rand Pauls view (whom I usually side with)before they added another 150 billion in defense funding and I also guess the 150 billion for the border are way too much – and in this context I’d totally understand Musk being pissed losing subsidies while the supercorrupt and extremely wasteful MiC got even more through a new backdoor.

While I guess that since Obama the doubling of the existing debt has become somehow integral to keep the system afloat and to postpone the debt avalanches’ breaking point,
I don’t think that accelerating the debt spiral with reckless spending will help the cause.
          On the other hand.
The assumed doubling of debt in the coming 8 years will be the last,as the dollar won’t survive the doubling after that.

        • Mike Peinsipp says:

That is about 25% of the problem. The big bil spends more without cuts. DC as usual

    • arn says:

While I usually appreciate Bannons comments,
that’s generalizing nonsense from the ” Trump is a narcisst” – kind.

Noone who is only about himself would risk to piss off 60% of his consumer base, especially not a crazy weaponized one who can go after you,
just as no narcissist would team up with someone like Musk, who can steal the spotlight from them and who can become a inconvenient pain as result of his status and the weight of his words.
Especially one with a huge media platform.

      • Bob G says:

I agree that Musks words carry weight mostly because he’s always carefully spoken those words in measured tones… until the last two days. in the last two days his words still carried weight but for the wrong reasons. he’s got a bat shoot crazy side to him. who knew. good riddance.

        • arn says:

Everyone knew that he is autistic and therefore can be pretty unbalanced and unpredictable in terms of social interaction.
He already had some harsh words for the left no other CEO would dare to say for the sake of profit.

And keep in mind that autistic people are not good at lying, though mild aspergers may have some skills,
therefore you’ll get the unfiltered stuff of what they think.
But Trump isnt holding back either.

      • Bob G says:

Arn, here’s the opinion of John hinderaker from powerlineblog.com… a conservative website. “Musk’s outburst was so irrational that it seems to reflect some kind of mental imbalance. It makes me wonder whether the rumors about his drug use–which liberal journalists were promoting just a week ago, before they joined Team Elon–might be true.”

        • arn says:

Well, I’m pretty sure you could find a dozen+ MSM
videos with “experts” telling us about Trumps obvious mental decline,
and not just some hearsay stuff.
( the same experts who couldn’t see anything wrong with Biden, while we ‘d been joking here about his obvious decline 5 years ago)

My take on this is that it is unlikely for autistic people to take any risk of increasing their imbalance with drugs.
If the shape of a shadow can already shatter your mental health, imagine what a drug will do to a delicate mind..

          But it is very simple.
I use the same method as with Trump.:
If there were drug allegations throughout the years then there is a good chance that he uses drugs. As this guy is 54 years old he wouldn’t have started recently.
If not, then all these claims are BS, as they were about Trump, who suddenly became a Nazi and so many more other things only after he entered politics.

There may be a chance that Musk became somehow addicted to some autism related medicine.
          But that’s it imo.
Maybe the exact opposite of drug abuse is true.
That he stopped taking certain meds and that this made went into freejazz mode.

Keep also in mind that Musk is said to have more than a dozen children(14+ iirc).
Combined with the fact that autistic people have a way more limited contact to other people a fertility decreasing drug addiction would make that impossible.
No junkie is that fertile, let alone an autistic one.

back to climate… or weather.. whatever.. . one of my daughters is now vacationing on the island of Majorca… south of Spain. she reports that the water is numbingly cold… “but you get used to it”. no …you don’t …your limbs become numb. lol. extended day forecast for where I live…. “south central Minnesota”… not one day predicted to hit 81. wow. as the late great John Daly always said still waiting for the greenhouse.

    • Our ‘record hot spring’ in the UK occasionally reached 24 C = 75 F, and was represented as bright red on the weather map. This level of gaslighting is positively insulting.

      • Gamecock says:

Agreed. It’s not unusual to see BBC call 75 °F “hot.”

If any damn place on earth could use warming, it’s UK.

        • arn says:

And that’s the place they want to block the sun.

If someone would try to block water from the Sahara everyone would instantly realize how crazy the idea.

      • Mike Peinsipp says:

        75°???
??????Heck that’s a nice cool day for Summer and for our Spring here in KY that’s about norm. Heck Summer here is 98° F!
