I wonder if Arthur C Clarke’s predictions about the dangers of trying to teach an AI to tell lies are becoming manifest. Perhaps there actually is a genuine HAL 9000 effect arising from the fact that lies are internally inconsistent, and eventually manifest themselves in obvious absurdity (perhaps the Pinocchio Nose Effect?).
Every other signal processing device can generate garbage in the presence of noise or data latency, why should AI be different? Just because the world of AI has no ability to predict behaviour in the abstract, in the manner of signal detection theory, information theory or servomechanism theory, does not mean the problems simply go away and we can pretend they don’t exist.

What you describe is not an autonomous AI which teaches itself, but a human programmed expert system. It is a matter of faith to believe it will cope with noisy data. You don’t have to read anything to figure out that AI is not all there; you just have to work with it a bit. It’s great at finding things, organizing things, doing specified math operations on things, but it’s bad at thinking about things and drawing conclusions. It doesn’t seem to sort complex thought patterns.
