A Reminder Of Some Of The Extreme Stupidity Of 2014

On January 6, with the Arctic at -30C and full of ice, Bryan Walsh of Time Magazine blamed the cold weather in the US on melting Arctic ice.

Then he went on to blame the polar vortex on global warming,

But not only does the cold spell not disprove climate change, it may well be that global warming could be making the occasional bout of extreme cold weather in the U.S. even more likely. Right now much of the U.S. is in the grip of a polar vortex, which is pretty much what it sounds like: a whirlwind of extremely cold, extremely dense air that forms near the poles. Usually the fast winds in the vortex—which can top 100 mph (161 k/h)—keep that cold air locked up in the Arctic. But when the winds weaken, the vortex can begin to wobble like a drunk on his fourth martini, and the Arctic air can escape and spill southward, bringing Arctic weather with it. In this case, nearly the entire polar vortex has tumbled southward, leading to record-breaking cold

In 1974, Time Magazine blamed the same polar vortex on global cooling.

Scientists have found other indications of global cooling. For one thing there has been a noticeable expansionof the great belt of dry, high-altitude polar winds —the so-called circumpolar vortex—that sweep from west to east around the top and bottom of the world.

Congratulations to Bryan Walsh for being one of the most mendacious humans alive.

That is what is called “making it up on the fly”. Also the belief that people are so stupid, they will believe anything they hear or read, regardless of how utterly ridiculous it sounds.

    • rachase says:

A lot like Obama who for 5 years bragged that he has ended the way in Iraq and withdrew all US troops just as he promised that he would when he was campaigniing, but now that things have gone sour over there says with a straight face that he had nothing to do with pulling all the troops out — that was Bush’s doing.

      • KTM says:

I heard O-doofus on the radio today, saying that we need to act to prevent the spread of Ebola. His explanation was that if it spreads it might ‘mutate’.

So an untreatable virus that is spread through casual contact and kills over half of those it infects isn’t a problem, but boy if it mutates we’re in trouble. I was shouting at the radio again…

  2. Rosco says:

A lot of people are so gullible they will believe crap like this if it fits with what they think is their belief system – I prefer gullible to stupid – it is essentially the same but less confronting.

What I’d really love to see is the generations of “true believers” go without all of their energy powered devices and social networks. They wouldn’t last long.

    • Gail Combs says:

Rosco, they wouldn’t last more than a week without CO2, coal/oil based products. No plastics, no cement, no metals (you need high heat to smelt the ores) no flashlights, no kerosene lamps, no candles, Only surface water to drink, no easy way to plant crops or harvest then or defend them from herbivores or thieves, no easy way to get them to market….

21st century first world humans do not have the survival skills needed to survive in a 16th century world.

    • Gail Combs says:

Considering the Democrat/Progressive powerbase is mainly spoiled rotten gimmes, it is more like one meal away.

  3. Psalmon says:

His article a week or so later was even more audacious claiming that this Winter (2014) was not that cold. To prove the point he showed a table with 10 cities and temps compared to average, seven in States like Texas, Arizona and California.

  4. SteveO says:

    Lazily sourced from Wikipedia:

“All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.”

—Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. I, ch. X[1]

    • Thanks, SteveO.

Mein Kampf is legal in Germany today but not easily available because after Hitler’s death the copyright defaulted to the State of Bavaria and its government does not support publishing the book in Germany (the copyright expires in 2016).

As a principle, I’m against suppressing the publication of books like Mein Kampf. Sunlight and public discourse may not always do the job but they are the only available disinfectants and there are scholars in Germany who want the book published for those very reasons.

Their fear is that if an authoritative version is not published before 2016, various neo-Nazi outfits will then publish their own, distorted versions.

That is possible but nobody seems to be worried much about those Progressives who are just fine with Hitler’s original text and already use it as an instruction manual, republished or not.

      • James the Elder says:

Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network is put up a parody of a kid’s summer getaway titled Mine Camp. I didn’t see enough to gather if it was just parody or a political statement of some sort. The brown shirts and learning how to goose step was enough to switch the channel.

    • I think I will print this section on little cards and have them ready for those moments in a discussion when a battered believer shouts his final argument:

“That’s impossible! Nobody could get away with a lie that big! People would figure it out!”

  5. Jl says:

“But it could be”, “it may well be…” My, how very definitive. But it couldn’t be and it may well not be.

  6. there is no substitute for victory says:

I would just like Mr. Walsh to tell us when Atlanta, Ga. became an East Coast City. Man, that sea level rise thing must of really gotten out of hand if the Atlantic Ocean is now lapping at the foot of Stone Mountain. Has anyone seen South Carolina?

    • Gail Combs says:

For our friends who might not be familiar with the topography of the USA.

    • Gail Combs says:

The Elevation for Atlanta is 1102 feet.
According to WIKI Atlanta has the highest elevation of major cities east of the Mississippi River.

They sure had fun there early Feb. this year. Bad enough when the roads are good. Bet they get another dose this winter. If they do, drive the miles to miss it.

        • Gail Combs says:

I rather not drive at all in the south when they have snow/ice. I have seen too many cars upside down in the median strip. Northerners living in Cary** NC think a couple inches of snow is nothing and do not realize there is an inch of ice under the snow and NC does not sand/salt the roads like the north does.

If I have to go out I put chains on all four wheels of my pkup truck.

**Cary = Containment Area for Relocated Yanks.

        • rah says:

Some of us have no choice. Prudence, listening to the radio to reroute or take an early break, and knowing the signs on the road that it had turned slick along just plain good luck have gotten me through so far. Winter is when I really earn my pay.

        • Gail Combs says:

rah, my hats off to you. The truckers who risk life and limb to make sure our civilization keeps running are very underrated.

I always go out of my way to make life as easy as possible for commercial drivers and did so well before I got a CDL.

      • nielszoo says:

Boy I hope that doesn’t happen. My SCUBA certification is only good for non-decompression dives and I think that 1,052 feet below sea level is a bit deep for me.
