64% Gain In Arctic Ice From 2012

On September 17, 2012 the extent of 30% concentration ice in the Arctic was 2.49 million km², and this year it was 4.09 km² on September 17. An increase of 64%. The past two years have been among the four highest of the past decade.

Experts say the Arctic has been ice free since 2013, or earlier – and that is is going to kill us all.

  1. bit chilly says:

jim hunt will be along to explain how the increase in ice extent this year and last is to be expected in a warming world and by next year we will be back into the arctic death spiral with a vengeance.

  2. The Iconoclast says:

The increase in arctic sea ice will first be ignored, then be dismissed, then be cited as proof as if the last few years of arctic climate alarmism had never occurred. There’s so much noise already they’ll keep their noise levels cranked and most people won’t pay attention to any of it, which is fine with them.

    • rishrac says:

I read the article in the Wall Street Journal titled Climate Science is not Settled. When I see certain statements like Arctic ice is decreasing, I wonder do some people think that we don’t live in an age where information is much quicker. This is going on 2 years now that Arctic sea ice has been increasing. They did get it right about the increasing sea ice in Antarctic. It’s a start toward a more rational discussion on climate. However I have seen this time and time again, information and assumptions reported lag the real time world in months or years, usually not in favor of the alarmists. In 2012 the rage was about the way the Arctic was melting, complete with rationale. So since the ice is increasing, what is the rationale now? Among the many doom and gloom forecasts, is this one going to quietly die a silent death also, never to be raised again?

Anybody reporting this stuff should be well aware that sea ice in the Arctic has been increasing. That’s a big development. That’s not some small issue that could be easily overlooked.

      • rah says:

“They did get it right about the increasing sea ice in Antarctic.”

        No “they” actually didn’t. rishrac.

Some of the Climate Borg are still claiming that massive gain is caused by melting land ice putting fresh water into the oceans where it freezes.

Meanwhile others, such as Hal Caswell, senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and his co-authors are publishing drivel such as this: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jun/29/emperor-penguins-at-risk-of-extinction-scientists-warn in which they say: “The entire population of Antarctica’s famous emperor penguins could fall by a third by the end of the century because of disappearing sea ice, putting them at risk of extinction…..”

It is like the Climate Borg lives in an alternative universe sometimes. No data can persuade them or change their course.

        • rishrac says:

At least they acknowledged that there was more sea ice. I agree, reality is absent from the AGW. I can’t believe that was re released as being current about the penguins. I thought they were saying that 10 years ago. It seems that I read recently that the penguins not only survived but are flourishing. There was an iceberg that broke off and the penguins were having trouble getting to their nesting grounds (due of course to global warming)

        • rah says:

Penguins have been around over 61 million years. I always have to snicker when I read the latest penguins may be doomed article.

  3. Mohatdebos says:

Forget the Arctic and the Antarctic — hardly anyone lives there and even fewer are capable of checking or verifying claims about ice. The Great Lakes provide ample ammunition. The alarmists were claiming the lakes were drying up and losing winter ice because of global warming. This past winter, when the lakes were completely ice covered and this summer when lake levels are at or above their historical average. I have not seen any explanations as to why from the alarmists.

  4. emsnews says:

Yes, the frozen Great Lakes and the very late melting was quite historic and not ‘weather’ but ‘climate’ big time.

  5. vuurklip says:

Reblogged this on vuurklip and commented:
Close your eyes to this if you want to remain a believer – faith is required to negate evidence.

  6. Send Al to the Pole says:

…..” In the end, it will just melt away quite suddenly!”……
    Inquiring minds: And then?
    Wadhams: Huh?
inquiring minds: And 2 months after that, what happens?
    Wadhams: well, uh, mmmm mmmrrph.
Inquiring minds: Did you say winter? Perpetual night? A new ice cover? Just like the previous one?

This is a powerfully-presented and well-documented and convincing talk about geoengineering and numerous cataclysmic ramifications, that will leave you bolted to the screen.
Statement by Geoengineering Expert, Dane Wigington:
“The western US is under an all-out climate engineering assault, California most of all.
“The Weather Makers can shut the hydrological cycle off from the once “golden state” for as long as they wish.
“Satellite images and NOAA maps shown in this presentation are shocking and revealing to say the least. Whatever one wishes to consider as the agenda of those in power, one conclusion is certain, the drought in California is a direct result of the ongoing climate engineering insanity. Weather warfare is now being waged on the American population.”

  8. Martin says:

It seems that the zombie “Arctic death spiral” just refuses to die!
In today’s Express an article about the antics of Prof. Peter Wadhams is headed:
“Arctic ice cap is in a ‘death spiral’, claims leading academic”

  9. plutarchspam says:

Maybe you could make up the table of changes for all prior years to 2014. Let’s see all those increases. Except, of course, they’re not. 2014 is lower than any year before 2007, and lower than 2013. There are very few years you could compare against and get a positive change in cover.

    • Gail Combs says:

Ever hear of the word “RECOVERING” ? Or the word “CYCLICAL”?

      • plutarchspam says:

🙂 I’ve also heard of looking at the data on a topic. The data show no cycle, and no recovery. That’s why no year 2007-present, even though you fantasize of recovery or a natural cycle, has had as much ice as any year before that.

  10. Perry says:

The DM is not adverse to its own scaremongering, with an article about 430,000 acres of land being left fallow in California. Drought not likely to be relieved in October, November or December or even next year! Well, which month is it? Hell’s teeth, my informed guess has a better chance of being right. Forecasters do not predict “owt”. A prediction may be a statement that some outcome is expected, while a forecast is more specific. Wills Robinson for MailOnline is a jism dribbler.

  11. mellyrn says:

I copied the image to play with in “gimp”. Found the bottoms of each of the curves and dropped a line down to the x-axis to determine the date of the minimum exent. 2014 also has the second-earliest minimum extent — second after 2011.

  12. Andy says:

My estimate of ice being similar to 2013 for minima seems to have been a lot more accurate as it turns out than estimating 2006 !! 🙂

    Andy

    • Arctic ice extent did exactly what I predicted it would in June.

      • plutarchspam says:

Could you provide a link to that prediction? I’ve searched the blog for June articles about arctic sea ice, and the only prediction of yours was the (much repeated) one that we wouldn’t see zero ice cover this September. Where did you predict the observed minimum area?
