There were 108,592,000 people in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2011 who were recipients of one or more means-tested government benefit programs, the Census Bureau said in data released this week. Meanwhile, according to the Census Bureau, there were 101,716,000 people who worked full-time year round in 2011. That included both private-sector and government workers.

When you consider that at least half the employed are gov’t workers, it means that only 50,000,000 are completely supporting the other 250,000,000

This is a very important post Steve. Good find, as usual.

This is what the “D” in (D)ummycrat really stands for, mob rule. It is about the takers outnumbering the givers. It’s about allowing the takers to vote to steal from the givers. Theft with the illusion of legality. Since there is no way such a Ponzi system can be sustained it will need to steal from the future taxpayers as well.. Hence the (D)ummycrats screaming for more debt.

Tipping Point is the right word too, if we are talking about voter numbers. However, unless one of two things happens there will still be no tipping of the broken system itself …

    (1) The taxpayers stop playing the game and refuse to pay any more into a rigged system where welfare takers vote for our money.

    (2) The system of debt is terminated by law and no more red ink can be written.

If neither occurs the current situation will persist indefinitely, heaping more red ink upon the previous red ink and taxing the future out to 10 generations or more. We have a live experiment of crossing ancient Greek mob rule with Zimbabwe economics.

For (1) If 100 million refused to pay federal tax the social security and welfare checks would begin to bounce and the game would begin immediately. However, that’s why there still is withholding today many years after WWII ended. That’s the only reason. Their hand in our pocket, 24/7/365.

For (2) if an Amendment passed denying any red ink under any circumstances ( no deficits, no exceptions ) and required firm principal payments on the debt each budget, almost all leftist Ponzi schemes would collapse and their voter base would have nothing to be bribed with.

Note that either of these two possibilities will be treated like sunlight by a vampire, with (D)ummycrats screaming bloody murder at anything that would upset their scam.

Medicare and Social Security are not means tested. So the number could be higher.

    • David A says:

Depends on definition of means testing. What one gets out of SS is heavily weighted towards the lowest portion of earnings gaining a higher percentage of retirement. However I see and understand the necessity we will have of further means testing with SS funds.

Here’s the breakdown in thousands of people. Mainly Medicaid and food stamps. The individual programs total 199,225,000, meaning a large share get at least 2 benefits. Startling that 82 million people are on Medicaid. How many are to be covered by Obamacare?

One or more means-tested programs 108,592
Public or subsidized rental housing 13,433
Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) 20,223
    Food stamps 49,073
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) 5,854
    Other cash assistance 4,957
Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) 23,228
    Medicaid 82,457

FORWARD to the Detroitification of America!

  6. Chewer says:

But, Harry Reid told us yesterday that the large majority of Americans, including the rich want to pay more taxes!
    Could Harry be mistaken?

  7. Liberius Cato says:

This can’t go on forever, therefore it won’t. There may not be easy answers, but there are simple ones, and the simple answer is that there’s no way forward with this and change is going to happen, period. We can either lean on our politicians enough that we can start choosing what the nature of our change is going to be, or have it crisis-legislated on us or imposed by martial law when the checks stop and the riots start.

  8. Marie says:

A friend who runs a small business once said the most malignant thing the government ever did was to require payroll withholding of taxes because it numbs people to the notion of taxes and makes them think that what they really earn is what is left over after the government’s take.

Want to fix the welfare state? Make everyone pull out their checkbook quarterly and write a check to the government the way small business people do. It would revolutionize the relationship of the individual to the state. The Dems who survive the tax riots would go out of business overnight and the GOP might actually start practicing what it preaches.

  9. John Edmondson says:

There should a simple principal for any system of government. You can’t take anything out until you have put something in. It won’t happen though. That is why the US (or any government in permanent deficit) could be considered to be technically insolvent.

  10. fred says:

bullshit, steve. approx 75% of welfare recipients are CHILDREN. if you were only concerned that we have millions of impoverished CHILDREN, you’d actually sound intelligent.
