Arctic Ice Movement Since The Minimum

Video of ice movement since September 18

During the winter of 2007-2008, a lot of multi-year ice (MYI) blew out into the North Atlantic and melted. Right now, the Arctic has nearly as much area of MYI as it did in 1995.

The image below was modified from the original NSIDC image to account for the recent Arctic ice birthday.

Modified NSIDC graph

The key to how much gain/loss of MYI we see in the Spring, is what the wind does this winter. So far, temperatures have been colder than any year since 2004 – so we will have to keep an eye on the winds to see what happens to the new ice.

PIPS = Polar Ice Prediction System

Why not use the real data Steve?

    • They forecast 24 hours in advance. PIPS is the US Navy’s “current operational ice forecast system.”

Do you think the US Navy operates using bad data?

Have you ever relied on a 24 hour weather forecast? I suspect that you probably have.

      • Brendon says:

Why don’t you post the real data then Steve? They may forecast 24 hours in advance, that just means their forecast is 24 hours old, not that they are using data from right this very minute to project 24 hours ahead.

A weather forecast and a sea ice forecast are not the same.

And would I ever rely on a weather forecast. HA!

    • Eyes Wide Open says:

More pointless drivel from Brendon the troll!

    • Amino says:

      Brendon

You are a spammer. You say that same thing every time.

The video starts in September, not in the future.

      Stop spamming.

      • ChrisD says:

Amino, spam is not simply a post with which you disagree.

A troll is not simply someone who posts stuff with which you disagree.

You guys here have really, really off-kilter concepts of what spam and trolls are.

If Steve insists in using predictions as though they were observations, it is on point, and not spam, to note this.

  2. Amino says:

That video is an optical illusion. If you put it next to ice in 1979 it is alarmingly small.

That video is an optical illusion. If you put it next to ice in the Medieval Warm Period it is huge.

An acorn falling from a tree is an optical illusion. If it falls on an every day person it looks like a new tree will be growing.

An acorn falling from a tree is an optical illusion. If it falls on a global warming alarmist it looks the sky is falling.

    ;o)

  3. Layne Blanchard says:

Sorry for not understanding….but didn’t they disappear vast areas of multi year ice just a few weeks ago?

  4. Nightvid Cole says:

How about “Area of MYI second lowest on record after 2008”? At least you’re not implying something way out of context or cherry-picking the year 1995/6…

  5. metric says:

stock up on all the spam you can. soon the trolls will freeze during this beginning ice age.

thank god for that! dont forget, the many, many trolls all over environmental, political, and many other forums that pushed the al gore filth. dont feed them when they are starving. let the green scum freeze.
