Dr. Julienne Stroeve told the environmental group Greenpeace in a press release, “The loss of summer sea ice has led to unusual warming of the Arctic atmosphere, that in turn impacts weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere, that can result in persistent extreme weather such as droughts, heat waves and flooding.”
Many, but not all, scientists agree that greenhouse gas emissions are the cause of climate change. However, virtually all climate and weather experts predict that the shrinking of the Arctic ice may have a profound effect that could be felt around the world. Major questions troubling scientists and ordinary people alike are: how quickly will these effects take place and what measures are appropriate to compensate.
One of the top concerns is the melting of the Greenland ice cap.
At one point this summer, surface melt was occurring across 97 percent of the Greenland ice cap. The decline of Arctic sea ice does not contribute directly to an increase in sea level. However, because it sits on land, the melting of the Greenland ice cap has the potential to raise sea level by many feet, possibly inundating low lying areas such as New Orleans, parts of Florida and numerous other locations around the globe.
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

Maybe the droughts and flooding will cancel each other out?
Odd nothing beneficial ever seems to come from these arctic ice hyjinks.
“Snow hits Australia in the middle of Spring”
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-19932805
“A cold snap has covered parts of Australia’s east coast with a blanket of snow, in the middle of spring.
Motorists were left stranded in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, while power lines were downed, trees uprooted and ferries cancelled due to high winds and hail in coastal areas.
Residents in Katoomba described the snowfall as the heaviest they had seen.
Forecasters predict the cold weather will give way to warmer temperatures over the weekend”
What’s with the 97% meme? It pops up in virtually all of their hype as some sort of scary or confirmatory number. Rather bizarre.
I think they did a telephone poll of a representative cross-section of the Greenland ice and came up with the 97% number. Obviously, a certain section of the Greenland ice are deniers.
Well, we know more open water is going to vastly improve the rate of heat transfer to space. I suppose they could be right, we might feel that. Interesting concept, huh. Ice slows heat flow, heat builds up in ocean, ice melts, open water increases heat flow to space, increases ice. Cycle repeats. This would make sense anywhere outside of climatology. I’ll bet that takes a few decades per cycle.
Why has 97% become the equivalent of “I don’t know what I am talking bout ” ?
I don’t get why all bullshit has become 97% of something that the speaker wants you to believe.
It gets repetitive.
97%?
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/07/18/about-that-overwhelming-98-number-of-scientists-consensus/
VP biden did it last night with “97% of small businesses ”
BS talk for “I don’t know how many”
I don’t know how many scientists accept the dumb consensus.
I don’t know how much of the ice sheet is melting.
I don’t know how many small businesses make x amount of dollars.
Julienne Stroeve has both front feet in the public trough. She is an arch alarmist who cannot produce any scientific evidence connecting ice extent with CO2, yet she is constantly peddling these scare stories.
Damn shame too, Smokey. I had high hopes for her. She’s smart and beautiful, but when you steer away from the evidence or make claims that can’t be supported, it’s a downhill sport from there.
I thought I saw somewhere 90% of the world’s ice is in Antarctica ?
Facts about Antarctica
http://www.coolantarctica.com/Antarctica%20fact%20file/fascinating_facts...
This is 90% of all the ice on the planet and between 60 and 70 % of all of the world’s fresh water. Only about 0.4 percent of Antarctica is not covered by ice.
We’re all gonna drown.
B-b-but Greenland is still there! IT MUST BE MELTING. WAIT, WHAT’S THAT WHITE STUFF?!
Dandruff! 🙂
I wonder about that Black stuff. The photos are about 2 years old now, but take a look at: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2010/06/melt-zone/balog-photography
With 97% confidence I reckon that 97% of climate statistics are wrong 97% of the time.
At one hundred point this fall, surface freeze was occurring across 100 percent of the Greenland ice cap.
