Arctic Ocean To Be Ice-Free By 2010

QUEBEC — The Arctic Ocean could be free of ice in the summer as soon as 2010 or 2015 – something that hasn’t happened for more than a million years, according to a leading polar researcher.  Louis Fortier, scientific director of ArcticNet, a Canadian research network, said the sea ice is melting faster than predicted by models created by international teams of scientists, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

I’m frankly frightened that a Scientific Director could be so incompetent, and still keep his job.

  2. DGP says:

Everything is “faster than predicted” or “worse than previously thought” with these guys. Then in the next sentance they will say that ‘the science is settled” or “95% certainty”. Come on man!

  3. gary says:

well he still has the 2015 date so he is hoping he gets alot of warming and metling in the next two years. Incredible to predict this kind of stuff in public!

  4. lanceap says:

Well….lets put this nut case story to bed in 2 years time…. of course goal posts will have been moved by then!

Actually the ice is moving the wrong way. The “Transpolar Drift” is now the “Transpolar Countercurrent.” http://www7320.nrlssc.navy.mil/hycomARC/navo/arcticicespddrfnowcast.gif

Rather than being amazed there is less ice down in Fram Strait, we should be amazed any ice remains there at all. No ice has moved from the north down that way in over a month. I track three “wrong-way” buoys to the north of Fram Strait at the bottom of my post at: http://sunriseswansong.wordpress.com/2013/09/19/arctic-sea-ice-minimum-the-darkness-decends/

This is the sort of “unprecedented” weather-event true scientists love to be taught by, for it shows them weaknesses in their ideas and makes them stronger. Pseudo-scientists hate this sort of event, for it puts their preconceptions through the grinder.

If ice isn’t being flushed out of the Arctic Sea, it only seems logical there will be a heck of a lot more up there next summer.

That is the stupidity on display here. Science is the search for truth, not the continuation of the consensus views, or making predictions based on nonsense.
