Hansen Fail 1988 : 20 Degrees Of Arctic Warming By 2025

Global Warming Has Begun, Expert Tells Senate

Published: June 24, 1988

Until now, scientists have been cautious about attributing rising global temperatures of recent years to the predicted global warming caused by pollutants in the atmosphere, known as the ”greenhouse effect.” But today Dr. James E. Hansen of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration told a Congressional committee that it was 99 percent certain that the warming trend was not a natural variation but was caused by a buildup of carbon dioxide and other artificial gases in the atmosphere.

If the current pace of the buildup of these gases continues, the effect is likely to be a warming of 3 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit from the year 2025 to 2050, according to these projections. This rise in temperature is not expected to be uniform around the globe but to be greater in the higher latitudes, reaching as much as 20 degrees, and lower at the Equator.

    I can see the refreezing.

June 24, 1988 – A date that will live in infamy for climatology. A date when the political active and the well connected left-wing launched their attack on right-minded and prosperous US citizens, with outrageous alarm and plans to castrate US industry.

12 years later Hansen didn’t think co2 was the main cause of the warming.

James Hansen et. al. – PNAS – August 15, 2000
    Abstract
Global warming in the twenty-first century: An alternative scenario
A common view is that the current global warming rate will continue or accelerate. But we argue that rapid warming in recent decades has been driven mainly by non-CO2 greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as chlorofluorocarbons, CH4, and N2O, not by the products of fossil fuel burning, CO2 and aerosols, the positive and negative climate forcings of which are partially offsetting. The growth rate of non-CO2 GHGs has declined in the past decade……

Then 3 years later he thought that soot was causing most of the warming.

James Hansen et. al. – PNAS – 4 November 2003
    Abstract
Soot climate forcing via snow and ice albedos
Plausible estimates for the effect of soot on snow and ice albedos (1.5% in the Arctic and 3% in Northern Hemisphere land areas) yield a climate forcing of +0.3 W/m2 in the Northern Hemisphere. The “efficacy” of this forcing is ~2, i.e., for a given forcing it is twice as effective as CO2 in altering global surface air temperature. This indirect soot forcing may have contributed to global warming of the past century, including the trend toward early springs in the Northern Hemisphere, thinning Arctic sea ice, and melting land ice and permafrost……

Over the past decade he is now certain it’s co2 thought he’s now baffled by the temperature hiatus.

Here’s a story on the 4 Arctic “rowers” from today, who quit half way across the NWP. They and the media spun the story to say they had lots of opinion and recollection of recent warm “climate change” despite the fact that they were frozen out. They also saw beavers and grizzlies as proof – of something. What crap.
