During this week in 1871, the worst forest fire in US history occurred. Fires driven by drought and hurricane force winds burned 2,000 square miles in a day or two – and killed more than 1,000 people around Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

    Systematically piling the logging slash, and burning a bit of it after each light rain, would have decreased the devastation and saved some lives. And yes, I’ve done a little slash burning in my day. But fire management costs money, and it is not a great short-term business strategy.
