NOAA shows that 2012 was the most extreme weather year in US history, despite the fact that there was little extreme weather last year – other than Sandy which isn’t included in the index. According to their fake index, 2012 was almost three times as extreme as the very extreme year of 1936. Their claim is almost entirely based on very mild temperatures during the winter and spring of 2012. which they are trying to pass off as “extreme.”

But what about the drought? The 1936 drought was at least as bad as the 2012 drought.
Bottom line is that some parts of NOAA are completely FOS. 1936 was much more extreme than 2012, by any reasonable standard.

I can’t think of entire cities wiped out by droughts lately, and I would love to see how they came by their drought loss figures. Parts of the gulf coast have still not recovered from 2005. These guys make Madoff blush.

Its not frauc, Steven just has a problem with the definition of ‘extreme’. And as a measure of how far the weather deviates from the norm, I see nothing wrong with it.
What is the norm?
Are the 1930 droughts the norm, so that current years are regarded as extreme because they are a bit wetter? Are the cold winters of the early 20thC the norm, so that mild winters are now regarded as extreme?
The whole thing is nonsense, and designed to promote the message that “climate change” is harmful. This is not science as well you know.
Read the documentation, about how the index was calculated. That particular index took into account 5 specific measures. And all extreme means is strong deviation from the norm, and using that methodology 2012 might well come out as extreme. Every methodology is going to have its shortcomings, and shouting ‘lol but 1930 looked more extreme’ is not a reasonable criticism.
I was on the east coast during that winter and spring, and the weather was absolutely lovely. No one in their right mind would call it extreme.
That is not a reasonable objection. You cannot refute such quantitative methodology with this sort of anecdotal evidence. Its like saying “smoking isn’t bad because I’m 105 and not dead yet”. Did you look at the documentation – the five measures taken into account? By extreme; clearly these five measures deviated from the normal such that that it could be considered extreme. Shouting ‘fraud’ is ridiculous and potentially libelous.

I live in the desert southwest and I do not recall anything in my life time (born in the 1950s) as extreme as the ’30s.
