Just How Incompetent Is NOAA?

NOAA shows that 2012 was the most extreme weather year in US history, despite the fact that there was little extreme weather last year – other than Sandy which isn’t included in the index. According to their fake index, 2012 was almost three times as extreme as the very extreme year of 1936. Their claim is almost entirely based on very mild temperatures during the winter and spring of 2012. which they are trying to pass off as “extreme.”

McKibben complained about the mild weather in October, 2012

incredibly quiet tornado season–there just aren’t any storms.

Twitter / billmckibben: endlessly weird weather

But what about the drought? The 1936 drought was at least as bad as the 2012 drought.

Bottom line is that some parts of NOAA are completely FOS. 1936 was much more extreme than 2012, by any reasonable standard.

War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength
Mild is Extreme

They are somewhat competent at propaganda.

“In 2012, there were 11 weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States. These 11 disaster events cumulatively caused over $110 billion in damages and 377 deaths. This makes 2012 the 2nd costliest year on record. 2005 was the most costly year since 1980 with $160 billion (in 2005 dollars) due to four land-falling hurricanes, including Katrina. With 11 events, 2012 also had the 2nd highest number of billion-dollar disaster events behind 2011 which had 14 events. The 2012 events included seven severe weather/tornado events, two tropical storm/hurricane events, and the year-long drought and associated wildfires. The two major drivers of damage costs in 2012 were Sandy at approximately $65 billion and the year-long drought at approximately $30 billion.”

I can’t think of entire cities wiped out by droughts lately, and I would love to see how they came by their drought loss figures. Parts of the gulf coast have still not recovered from 2005. These guys make Madoff blush.

Not incompetent. It’s clearly purposeful fraud.
We need to take them to court.

Its not frauc, Steven just has a problem with the definition of ‘extreme’. And as a measure of how far the weather deviates from the norm, I see nothing wrong with it.

      • What is the norm?

Are the 1930 droughts the norm, so that current years are regarded as extreme because they are a bit wetter? Are the cold winters of the early 20thC the norm, so that mild winters are now regarded as extreme?

The whole thing is nonsense, and designed to promote the message that “climate change” is harmful. This is not science as well you know.

        • Atowermadeofcheese says:

Read the documentation, about how the index was calculated. That particular index took into account 5 specific measures. And all extreme means is strong deviation from the norm, and using that methodology 2012 might well come out as extreme. Every methodology is going to have its shortcomings, and shouting ‘lol but 1930 looked more extreme’ is not a reasonable criticism.

      • I was on the east coast during that winter and spring, and the weather was absolutely lovely. No one in their right mind would call it extreme.

        • Atowermadeofcheese says:

That is not a reasonable objection. You cannot refute such quantitative methodology with this sort of anecdotal evidence. Its like saying “smoking isn’t bad because I’m 105 and not dead yet”. Did you look at the documentation – the five measures taken into account? By extreme; clearly these five measures deviated from the normal such that that it could be considered extreme. Shouting ‘fraud’ is ridiculous and potentially libelous.

I live in the desert southwest and I do not recall anything in my life time (born in the 1950s) as extreme as the ’30s.

Those claiming otherwise are ignorant, insane or both.

Certainly weather and climate of late has been benevolent in the southwest compared to the 1930s.

  7. At some point (perhaps around “atowermadeofcheese”‘s second comment), you have to ask instead, “How UNCONSCIOUS (of reality) is NOAA”–and its little dogs too. (I know there are little dogs behind all of this, by the way–don’t think I can’t see what you are doing, Mr. “Small Fuzzy” Goddard–pass me another one of those good brownies on your way out, would you? And where’s my Homer/Hansen with his axe, tell me that–you can’t, can you. Hah. I win.)
