Last night I visited my 83 year old friend on the lake. We stepped out of the house to go canoeing close to dark, when a black widow spider landed on my forehead. That will teach me to make fun of Michelle’s Arachnid dress.
It was perfect canoeing conditions, despite the unprecedented 70ºF heat – which had shut down the schools a day earlier. I asked her about Chicago in the 1930s, and she didn’t remember anything about the weather – but she did remember seeing the wreckage of the train tracks in the Florida Keys from the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. She drove by there in 1943, and remembers seeing seven miles of completely wrecked tracks. She also told the story of how people had fought for ownership of those tracks prior to the hurricane.
Most importantly, she said that her father forbade the family from using the word “Roosevelt” in the house.
My father always forbade the phrase “massive head wound” at the dinner table.
The black widow was a climate change refugee.
Thanks for the story. Michelle is six years older than me and has therefore seen more of life.
Many societies had respect for older citizens like Michelle. That attitude changed after frightened world leaders decided in 1945 to take totalitarian control of humans in order to protect themselves from nuclear annihilation.
The rest is recorded in sixty-eight years of society’s slide into insanity.
This seems a good time to say that I am reading a book on American Presidents.

That was all it said. But the rest of the book seems pretty factual.
The reign of FDR had one result that may save the US from ruin. Because of his 4 terms a new amendment was passed forbidding a president from serving more than 2 terms. If you think that the moronic voting majority wouldn’t vote for Obama for a 3rd term you’re wrong.
