Rolling Stone Takes Industrial Grade Stupid To New Levels

Fact-Checking the Global Warming Deniers

Beware of these oft-repeated talking points. None of them are true

By JEFF GOODELL

1. There’s more ice in Antarctica than ever.

The past few years have seen an expansion of Antarctica’s coastal ice sheets – a byproduct, ironically, of climate change, which has brought increased snow and rainfall to the continent. Meanwhile, Antarctica’s inland ice sheets are melting at an alarming rate – 1,350 billion tons of ice disappeared into the ocean between 1992 and 2011. And that rate is increasing, fueling global rises in sea level.

Global Warming: Fact-Checking the Deniers | Politics News | Rolling Stone

Increased snow and rain is causing sea ice to spread? What kind of moron would think up such idiocy? Sea ice is formed when cold air over the water extracts enough heat to cause the seawater to freeze. Antarctic sea ice has spread because air temperatures have been getting colder.

And it takes a double moron to believe that Antarctica is below freezing at warmer lower latitudes and altitudes (edge of the sea ice) while melting in the colder interior at higher latitudes and altitudes. Not to mention the fact that sea ice freezes at a lower temperature than glacial ice.

The rumors about Antarctica losing mass are from some fatally flawed gravity studies from the University of Texas a few years ago, done by people who were too stupid to know that glacial rebound causes the bedrock below the glaciers to change elevation. Their legacy of junk science continues to grow and expand.

Galileo went through a similar stupidity with the holy catholic church in the 1600’s.

This New Global Warming Religion is taking us backwards.

  2. R. de Haan says:

This hack Jeff Goodell contacted Anthony Watts and asked him for his opinion.

    A candidate for Tar.

“My dear Kepler, I wish that we might laugh at the remarkable stupidity of the common herd. What do you have to say about the principal philosophers of this academy who are filled with the stubbornness of an asp and do not want to look at either the planets, the moon or the telescope, even though I have freely and deliberately offered them the opportunity a thousand times? Truly, just as the asp stops its ears, so do these philosophers shut their eyes to the light of truth.”

      slightly paraphrased 😉

      • Jason Calley says:

phodges, you are very correct. I have spoken with more than a few CAGW enthusiasts and I always offer to send them links to web sites with actual DATA on temperatures, etc. Not opinions, not models, not projections — but actual data. I have never had any of them accept the offer.

  4. mike says:

Yippeeee, Rolling Stone has found the missing heat. Marijuana was the missing link.

  5. Andy DC says:

How can ice in the interior be melting when it amost never gets about 0 degrees F, let alone 0 degrees C?

  6. Don B says:

The Southern Ocean surface temperature has been cooling. That may have something to do with more sea ice forming.

  7. Andy Oz says:

I have a lot of time for Matt Taibbi at Rolling Stone but this Goodall guy is at the other end of the IQ bell curve. At least 4 standard deviations below brain dead.

  8. Even the IPCC were not daft enough to try that one.

The best they could offer to explain increasing ice was “natural vatiability”!

  9. Fred from Canuckistan says:

C’mon guys, cut this poor scribe some slack. He is just trying to make a living and it is very difficult when you only have a useless degree in English Lit from a UC campus and a job history that peaked at bartender in a titty bar.

If he can’t write moronic, clueless, stupid, idiotic anti scientific crap for a slimy outfit like Rolling Stone, what would he do for a living?

I mean he isn’t even qualified to ask people if they would like fries with their order. Maybe he could make a living scamming food stamps and selling Obama phones on a Freeway on ramp or try and win a nose picking or ear wax scraping contest somewhere.

  11. Justa Joe says:

This Jeff Goodell character, who is some kind of at large ‘environmental’ activist cum ‘journalist,’ doesn’t appear to have sufficient facts at his disposal to “fact check” anyone on this subject. The guy is talking in circles.

Whatever is happening regardless of what it may be he knows it’s bad, and it is because of capitalism. These lefty pencil necks think that they are going to shout down and intimidate people.

  12. Mike Mellor says:

If Goodell had one brain cell fewer he would mess in his pants.

  13. papiertigre says:

Goodell , your hair is on fire, stoner.

  14. rw says:

In some ways it’s an interesting conceptual cut-and-past job. Take

expansion of Antarctica’s coastal ice sheets – a byproduct, ironically, of climate change, which has brought increased snow and rainfall to the continent

This is borrowed from the current line on Arctic ice melting, which is supposed to be giving us more snow in the winter, but our boy has transferred the idea from the northern hemisphere to Antarctica. Or does the Arctic Oscillation now reach all the way to the southern hemisphere? Who cares, as long as one can craft an argument with a surface plausibility.

    Jeff Goodell Bio

I was born and raised in Silicon Valley, where my family had lived for four generations. I’ve worked as a blackjack dealer, a glazier, a janitor, a bartender at a topless club, an editor at a Russian literary journal, and a technical writer at Apple. I have a BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MFA in Fiction Writing from Columbia University.
    ……………..
I began my career as a journalist covering crime and politics in New York City for 7 Days, a weekly magazine that won a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1990. Since 1996 I have been a Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone, where I have written about a wide variety of subjects, from hookers and politicians to climate scientists and internet billionaires.

Jeff Goodell knows what he’s talking about. 🙂

  16. The interior is rapidly melting where it gets as cold as -60C.

  17. mike says:

Let’s crowd fund an air drop of Goodell into the Antartica interior, we could pick him up in a few months after he experiences the unprecedented heat. Rolling Stoned would be famous.

  18. Scott Scarborough says:

Doesn’t the Grace Satellite mission say the sea level is falling or at least rising at a lower rate than even tidal basins indicate? Why do they use it’s data when it seems to confirm their bias and ignore it when it does not?
