September 21 Breaks The Record For Most Sea Ice Ever Measured At Either Pole

On September 21, Antarctica had the most sea ice ever measured at either pole – 19,514,000 km².  The extent of southern hemisphere sea ice has increased dramatically since the start of satellite records in 1979.

Most people with an IQ over 30 understand that ice forms when the air is cold, but this seems to exclude a significant number of government scientists.

  1. Pathway says:

Here in the high desert we are about to break a record for precip. going back to 1891. So much for perpetual drought.

  2. I have an odd feeling such information won’t be splashed over the evening news.

  3. Cheshirered says:

It’s caused by the rapidly-melting inner Antarctic spilling out into the ocean, and is certainly much worse than previously thought.

  4. Okie says:

Warmists may need to be buried up to asses in ice like wooly mammoths before they figure this out. The lust for power will do that.

  5. Don says:

So according to their perverted science I can leave my ice cube trays out on the counter at room temperature and next day I’ll have ice cubes? Wow………

  6. Antonio says:

Keep in mind that if government scientists were any good, corporations would buy them away from the government.

  7. Gene says:

    Marian
They already tried that… the 1970’s global cooling scare!

  8. tom0mason says:

The patented CO2 oven now comes with the CO2 refreeze feature.

Sorry we only have pictures of the old version – new version will be here just as soon as we have worked out the science.

  9. Eric Simpson says:

At some point you have to say the weight of evidence is such that CO2 itself, in terms of its “established physics,” is suspect.

In need of debunking are the falsehoods stated in this LA Times Article titled “Global warming ‘hiatus’ puts climate change scientists on the spot.” http://www.latimes.com/science/la-sci-climate-change-uncertainty-20130923,0,791164.story

    Incredible is this excerpt:

Other climatologists, such as Bill Patzert of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, say sea level rise is “unequivocal proof” that greenhouse gases are continuing to heat the planet, and that much of this added heat is being absorbed by the oceans.

As ocean water warms, it expands and drives sea levels higher, Patzert said. Currently, oceans are rising at an average of more than 3 millimeters, or 0.12 of an inch, per year. This pace is significantly faster than the average rate over the last several thousand years, scientists say.

“There’s no doubt that in terms of global temperatures we’ve hit a little flat spot in the road here,” Patzert said. “But there’s been no slowdown whatsoever in sea level rise, so global warming is alive and well.”

Whether that message is communicated successfully by the IPCC this week remains to be seen.

  10. margaret berger says:

Yup, we know that all that “missing heat” is dropping to the bottom of the ocean and pushing the water up. It’s sneaky heat too as it slipped past all them thar buoys things that measure temperatures on it’s way down and it’s way up. But it is there by golly it is there just waiting and when you least expect it, it will come out and melt all the ice caps at once. The only way to save us is to send money to al gore so he can buy a another house. Then we will be saved.

  11. Phil Jones says:

Wont see this headline anywhere else….

  12. Phil Jones says:

So much for the 400,000 Hiroshima Bombs per second of lost heat… notice how with the pause in temps… the Alarmists have switched to the oceans all of a sudden… as if Air Temp is suddenly not important…

  13. Jct: We could sure use some global warming. Wonder why Green Party’s Adriana Magnutto-Hamu isn’t paying off her losing $100 bet that the temperature has continued rising over the past 20 years? How long do I get to keep laughing at her for losing her bet and reneginbg on payment. Har har har. She is losing to the Great Canadian Gambler so it’s not as her being a loser is that unexpected.

  14. Andy says:

“Most people with an IQ over 30 understand that ice forms when the air is cold”

Hold on a minute, climate sceptics have been going on for 6 years now that the summer minima for 2007 in the Arctic sea ice was mainly wind driven… including yourself.

So maybe this large extent is wind driven as well? Actually it does seem to be the case.

    Andy

  15. Cowpoke says:

I can’t believe it, The Washington Post reported on it:
Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record large extent for a second straight year, baffling scientists seeking to understand why this ice is expanding rather than shrinking in a warming world.

Meanwhile, at the North end of the planet so much ice is gone that large freighters are now able to sail through the Northwest Passage.

      ========================================================

      Name one.

    • Gene says:

Not so in 2013 David! You must have missed the part about the Arctic having 60% more sea ice than 2012. It’s still below the “norm”… well, the “norm” since 1979 when satellites first started tracking Arctic ice.
