The Progression of Evil

Ten years ago climate scientists lied, cheated and tampered because they were pretty sure that all of their psychotic theories would come true later.

Now they lie, cheat and tamper only to protect their funding and reputations.

Those who are committed to a “cause” based on belief and ideology will go to great lengths to deny facts that expose the lies and fallacies underlying their positions.

Some will commit unethical and/or illegal acts to preserve the basis of their beliefs

Maybe not evil, but certainly the lowest rung on the ladder of human nature

Thank goodness a few guys on JetSkis in the Arctic told the truth… “We were surrounded by ice”

It only cost 2 million dollars to rescue them.

Rush Limbaugh had a nice monolog about global warming on his show this afternoon. I thought it was very well thought out with many valid points.

As the movement descends in a muddle of madness and self-preservation, will it find its Rudolf Hess? Who among them will rise to have “atoned for this by his completely devoted and frantic deed of lunatic benevolence”?

I think Rush monitors this blog.

No, they are paid to lie cheat and tamper. Period

That’s it in a nutshell, I think. They tampered the, with the old poor data, because they didn’t want to wait on real data. Now they’re faced with real data. The question I have is will they get away with tampering again? They’ve tampered with surface station data (continually, actually–historical data literally changes every time new data comes in), Argo float data, satellite data, sea level data… I’m sure some will try again with the surface station data, but will there be A Few Good Men and Women who stand for truth? We’ll have to see.

    Steven,

“Ten years ago climate scientists lied, cheated and tampered because they were pretty sure that all of their psychotic theories would come true later.”

    You are definitely an optimist.

“Global Warming and Lee Harvey Oswald” – by Joel Achenbach, Washington Post.

I put that in the headline — trying, devilishly, to snare innocent readers out there who type “global warming and Lee Harvey Oswald” into a search engine. But also, I read the excellent Ron Rosenbaum piece in Smithsonian on the Zapruder film. Ron works his way steadily into some heavy epistemological territory, discussing the resilience of conspiracy theories, the indestructibility of doubt, and what you might call the fog of reality. Errol Morris has a better metaphor for the theories about the JFK assassination: “The labyrinth to nowhere.”

In the words of R. Feynman –

“ …doubt is not to be feared, but that it is to be welcomed, as the possibility of a new potential for human beings.”

      and

“This freedom to doubt is an important matter in the sciences.”

      and

      “All scientific knowledge is uncertain.”

      and

“So what I call scientific knowledge today is a body of statements of varying degrees of certainty….none is absolutely certain.”

      and

      “the worst of times…”
…,times in which there were people who believed with absolute faith and absolute dogmatism in something.”

  13. In the 70’s millions of unnecessary tonsillectomies were performed because (a) it was a steady source of income for surgeons and (b) the practice was endorsed by the major medical associations. Eventually the public became more sceptical and the practice was dramatically scaled down.
