Julienne Stroeve at NSIDC has been saying for years that the Arctic is losing 5+ year old ice, and I have been pointing out to her for years that there is going to be be a huge increase in five year old ice in 2014.
NSIDC has now confirmed that what I have been saying is going to occur. Next March, there is going to be a lot of 5+ ice.

The west part of the Laptev Sea and the east part of the Kara Sea show a larger amount of ice than in Steve’s picture.

I have no idea if any have more merit I just watch, compare and wonder!
What I notice is the lack of ice trickling down the east coast of Greenland. That is an exit route for a lot of ice. It gets flushed south through Fram Strait, reducing the “extent” of ice in a manner that has zip-zero to do with temperatures to the north, (though it may reduce temperatures in the south on years when extreme amounts of ice are flushed out.) However this year the ice isn’t flushing. Call a plumber, because if the ice doesn’t flush, it just swirls about the bowl…I mean Pole.

I do check that map, on the WUWT “Sea Ice Page,” and it often mystifies me. I’m not sure it isn’t a forecast rather than current conditions, because it doesn’t always jive with the specific reality of the “North Pole Camera Site.” Sometimes the latitude and longitude given for that site can indicate the ice is moving one way but the Navy map states it is going another. The past two days have indicated a slow drift south for that site, in a calm between two wind-fields, but the Navy site makes it look like the ice is surging south at top speed, with the map colored red.
Do you know what the measure of speed is for those maps?
The ice is currently moving south at roughly a sixth of a mile per hour, or roughly four miles a day. At that rate it will be a hundred days to get to the melt-place in Fram Strait. And that would require a hundred days with no south winds pushing the ice back north.

‘the other side’ is saying that 34 years of satellite records can explain EVERYTHING about the total history of the ice caps. If that makes sense to you….
