Trenberth : Cooling Is The New Warming

The irony, says Trenberth, is that when the surface of the planet is unusually sweltering, the Earth actually radiates more heat into the atmosphere, in effect slowing the long-term warming of the planet. And in “hiatus” years, when the surface is cooler, the Earth absorbs more of the sun’s heat deep the oceans, slowly cooking the planet. What you see isn’t always what you get.

  1. Olaf Koenders says:

He needs to be held to account for his deep ocean heat rubbish. Can he explain how the heat got there from the surface without it being detected? No.

  2. John B., M.D. says:

What a moronic pseudoscientific comment by Trenberth. Seriously?

  3. tom0mason says:

What the heck is he on? This is the raving of the unbalanced.

  4. Billy N.Z. says:

Trenberth is sure one mixed up little puppy.

  5. Fred from Canuckistan says:

Who knew you could get a PhD in stand up comedy.

Poor man, he has gone full Eco Nutter Loonie.

  6. gregole says:

Pure foolishness; he is getting close to the insanity of Hansen/Ehrlich. They are simply mad; Trenberth may just be doing all he can to stretch logic and credulity to keep the scam alive a little longer in order to milk the last drops of money from it.

Or he is just insane. It is possible.

  7. jerry says:

    99.997% of warmunists are insane

  8. DirkH says:

Whom the gods want to destroy they first make mad.

  9. X says:

Trenberth’s comment is completely refuted by the facts, as usual.
OLWR is increasing (due to decreased cloud cover) both during strong or low solar cycles in the last 60 years,
”… we measure OLWR, and a large increase is noted. The IPCC predicts an 0.9W/m^2 reduction in total OLWR per doubling CO2. However, we’ve see a dramatic increase…”
    http://westernusawx.info/forums/index.php?showtopic=33725&p=640323

    and
“… OLWR has increased markedly over time as surface temperatures warmed. There was a slight dampening in the CO2 spectrum but it was tiny and argues for a lack of thermalization ….. [The] reason for this is a decrease in cloud cover, O^3, and H2O (the decline in H2O above 850mb has outweighed any increase in backfired LWR via increasing CO2 by a factor of 57)…. Even over the last decade the OLR increase continues, though slower…”

  10. Rosco says:

The real insanity is that anyone believes that anything other than the Sun actually provides any energy input to the Earth.

Only plants are capable of “trapping” this energy input.

Water has a transient ability to “trap” and transport energy ending with precipitation.

CO2 and other so-called GHGs have no “heat trapping” ability at all.

Even if GHGs do slow down the Earth’s cooling rate –

a claim that is completely at odds with Trenberth’s claim that GHGs are responsible for most of the radiation to space leaving one to wonder how increasing that which radiates most of the energy away does not increase the rate of radiation to space –

but even if they did slow the cooling off it is still the Sun that supplies all energy input to Earth !

  11. That claim is devastating evidence that Trenberth has no effin clue about radiative physics. Did he really think it would radiate less if it was warmer? WTF dude, that’s embarrassing.

  12. D. Self says:

Trenberth is a lunatic. His cash cow is getting ready for the slaughter. It’s called throwing shit against the wall and see what sticks….

  13. A bar of red hot iron radiates more than a chunk of dry ice. Therefore, the dry ice is warmer than the red hot iron. Yep. That’s AGW science.

  14. The whole “deep ocean heating” is probably very easy to prove or disprove. Since about 1985, there have been numerous “deep sea dives” to one single spot – the site of the Titanic.

I’m sure that each time they visited, they took temp readings. From that, they should be able to see a trend if one exists.

  15. margaret berger says:

A line from a Clint Eastwood movie comes to mind, “Don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining.”

  16. SMS says:

Hidden heat in the oceans is such rubbish. Where is the accelerated sea level rise that would result from so much heat entering the oceans? What rubbish. Trenberth is inhaling too much of the whacy tobacky smoke going up his ass.

  17. Jimmy Haigh. says:

“Climate Science”: Making it all up as they go along.

  18. How much would ocean water have to expand in response to the added heat? Is this observable? Is this observed?

  19. lorne50 says:

WTF is he saying I’m lost for words ??????

  20. Billy N.Z. says:

Lorne50. I think Trenberth was lost for words when he spouted that sh@t.

  21. tom0mason says:

This could be the first public example of the El niño se orina effect.

  22. Larry Fields says:

Where did Trenberth get his PhD? In a Cracker Jack box?

  23. B.C. says:

I’m going to try this new “Trenberthian Deep-Sea Cooking Method” when I go to make mojo pork this weekend. I’ll put some marinated pork in a crock pot and stick it in the freezer overnight and I’ll let you guys know how well it turns out. All of that “Trenberthian Radiation” should cut the cooking time down by at least 95% and the meat should just fall apart with a fork. 😀

  24. Tom Bakert says:

I’ve read and reread this quote several times and my take-away is this: when the temperature difference of the atmosphere and the ocean is greater, more energy is radiated to space; conversely, when the temperature difference between the atmosphere and the ocean is less, more energy is absorbed by the oceans. Makes perfect sense to me. /sarc

  25. Climatism says:

Reblogged this on CACA and commented:
The deep oceans are slowly cooking the planet after 17 years of no temperatutre rise at all. Makes ‘cents’ for some.

  26. Justa Joe says:

We’re at the point now where they’re going to have trouble keeping all of their stories straight.

  27. Kaboom says:

So apparently cool air transfers more heat to a water surface than warm air. Which would be a rather vicious positive feedback that sucks all the warmth out of the air until it hits 0 K.

“Hidden heat in the oceans is such rubbish.”

I have taken to calling it “The Immaculate Convection,” whereby heat was transported to the depths without any actual penetration of the upper layers. Every good religion requires miracles.
