[UPDATE : This post is incorrect. I incorrectly included stations which had precipitation data back to 1895, but not necessarily temperature data. Ignore everything below, while I do further analysis]
There are 202 GHCN stations in Australia which were active in 1895, and were still active in 2013. They show Australia used to be much hotter, 1900 was the hottest year, and that BOM’s claim that 2013 was the “hottest year ever” was complete BS. It wasn’t even close.
Similar to the US, temperatures in Australia have been trending downwards for over a century. One interesting year is 1966, which was very cold in Australia.

Steve, tonight I have has two of your threads with a chart showing up on the right side superimposed on the comment listing.

September 1966
Australian Skiers jubilant as late snowfalls extended the ski season.

2014, Australian skiers are again jubilant with substantial late snow forecast this week.
June 1965 – Alice Spring frozen stiff at 23F

What can you find out about the summer of 1974 (besides Tracy) It was very cool that summer.
One event was the beaching of the Sygna on Stockton Beach in a monster storm in 1974. The storm knocked over almost every TV antenna in Newcastle, besides lifting roofing offplenty of houses. I remember cos I delivered papers around town.

There was a repeat storm that beached the Pasha Bulka on Nobby’s Beach.
1974 Also had Wagga record floods, Brisbane Record floods, Newcastle monster storm and Cyclone Tracy in one year!
Canberra freezes in November 1965.
Snow fell steadily

I want to hug you! Yes, it was much hotter back then: 100 plus years ago. And your chart also suggests 1960 was a bit of a turning point. So what about two lines… one of cooling to 1960 and then another of warming to about 2002? I suggest why for NSW here… http://jennifermarohasy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Changing_Temperature_Data.pdf
I’m very surprised that there were 202 stations active back then and still active today. That is a lot more than I would have thought. You’ve provided a list. Where can we find the data that matches.
Jennifer,
I thought you would like that! It was a huge pain figuring out which of the 20,000 GHCN ASN stations actually had temperature data, and it took me all day yesterday to accumulate the list from here ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/ghcn/daily/all/
Important to note that my calculations are not gridded, so they produce a strong bias towards the coasts. There are 1,650 temperature stations in all
If you have any specific investigations you would like done, it is easy for me now that I have the list of temperature stations.
Alarmists at Climate Science . Org are disappointed in Jenn Marohasy and the Australian.
Apparently questioning the “quality controlled” BOM data is not “scientifically legitimate.”
http://www.climatescience.org.au/content/775-questions-over-bureau-meteorology-data
Then again, when I was told that Santa Claus was not real, I too was disappointed.
Over the past 5 years, I watched as the available BOM temp data charts changed from no warming trends in sites not UHI effected (my favourite was Nobby’s Hedland in Newcastle), to almost every site having “warming.” I smelt a rat, and Jenn has been brave enough to have a crack at discovering who the rat is. We now know. As a taxpayer funded organisation, the BOM should put all unadulterated climate data on a government database accessible to all. We paid for it. While the BOM say their adjustments are “quality controlled” and “peer reviewed”, they have lost all credibility. It may be years before they regain it.
The famous explorer, Captain James Ross, who set up the first weather monitoring station in Australia (Hobart) in 1840, would be very “disappointed” that BOM apparatchiks were fiddling with his weather records.
http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2008/05/28/2257898.htm
You can probably add Charleville Queensland to this list.
The Post Office site ran from about 1875 till 1959.
The airport runs from 1942 till current and is most likely quoted, ignoring the overlap
This ones going to be a lot harder for them to ignore.
But you still haven’t “layed a glove” on “our BOM”.
Simply because anybody that counts (read government) is conspicuous in their silence and inaction.
All your getting is a two fingered salute from “our BOM”.
And thats making a lot of people angry.
I wonder if the BOM realize the size of the storm they are creating?
@JenniferM and @TonyH: Humbly, I am in the presence of greatness on this thread.
Thanks to both of you on your great effort exposing these alterations to
the historical records. Huzzaahh!
If these homogenists increase the trends much more, the data will be pateurised, never mind homogenised
or pasteurised
Does that mean the trend will also be sterilised? Completely free of real-life data!

Hottest ever…*cough*
Much like the Northern Hemisphere, Australia was cold in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
