And they have a heck of a lot of windmills in southern and Western Ontario.
One thing that stood out to me was:
export 2,799 MW.
Export to where? Quebec? Manitoba? NE US?
Mostly to the US. Manitoba is too far from the sources I would guess and Quebec has surplus and exports to the US.
Ontario loses about a billion dollars a year giving power to New York, Micigan and Quebec.
Wind power is vastly out of sink with power demand in my province of Ontario. We even massively pay wind turbines to sit idle. In May, 44% of the potential wind power was paid to sit idle.
In the first nine months of 2017, we paid the provincial utilty OPG to spill enough water to have supplied 666,667 homes with power for each of those months.
In a nut shell we spill water to make way for wind power that we give to the Americans for almost nothing.
About 90% of the time we pay 90% of the gas-fired power plant capacity to sit idle. The capacity is about 8,000 MW.
One uneeded plant in Napanee will be paid about $15,000/installed MW/month of unused capacity. If it sits idle all year long, it will we paid $162 million.
And yet we have continued to vote for the Liberal Party who know better than the rest of us and have instituted these crazy policies. Now our electricity is subsidized to alleviate the immediate pain but there will always be a day of reckoning. Businesses of course love paying way more for power versus what is available in Michigan just down the 401.
Part of the problem is we need more people to come out and vote
with our ‘dear leader’ here in Alberta, we won’t be far behind….
We have a small solar farm a ways down the road from us. My wife and I remark about it every time we drive by it. I suspect they haven’t generated a single kWh in the past 2-3 weeks.
I have a few solar lights in my backyard that illuminate my golf flags at night. For the past 2-3 weeks they haven’t generated enough power to stay lit more than an hour. During sunny summer days, they easily illuminate all night long. The night before last, they weren’t even able to illuminate at all.
Solar energy is pathetic at best. Bird beaters are even worse.
Nothing wrong with properly configured solar power and batteries for specific applications. Just in the few kilomteres around me there are off grid (through necessity) installations, community lighting, bore pumps and security gate openers. It has its niche, but reliable , affordable grid scale powere it aint.
Look for the big diesel generator tucked away somewhere. :-)
Don’t know what we would have done without nuclear.
And all this as Canada launches the first of many National Carbon Taxes to fight “global warming”. Yet another Globalist ruse to clean out our savings and make dependence on the government inevitable. And we voted for it. A smiling simpleton told Canadians he would get them high, use their prosperity to save the down trodden and get the world to love Canada…like that is a thing…And Canadians voted for him with a smile on our faces.
One day, in future, people will talk about a country from not too long ago, a small population on a gigantic, resource rich land mass and wonder how Canadians could squander so much so easily…and the people of the future will, justifiably, laugh.
Canadians and Australians have much in common. Sadly one of those things is stupidity about renewables.
Sooner or later simple economics will force them to face reality. I thank goodness we here are backing away from the edge of the abyss and in doing so will hasten the day those economic realities becoming evident to our competition and trading partners.
