In addition to the massive amounts of government funding going into Universities through grants that require the “right outcome” – there is this interesting bit of psychology to consider:

Why Facts Don’t Change Our Minds

False beliefs can be useful in a social sense even if they are not useful in a factual sense. For lack of a better phrase, we might call this approach “factually false, but socially accurate.” When we have to choose between the two, people often select friends and family over facts.

In many circumstances, social connection is actually more helpful to your daily life than understanding the truth of a particular fact or idea. The Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker put it this way, “People are embraced or condemned according to their beliefs, so one function of the mind may be to hold beliefs that bring the belief-holder the greatest number of allies, protectors, or disciples, rather than beliefs that are most likely to be true.”

      You are right.

Way back, Ayn Rand coined the term ‘Social Metaphysician’ to describe such people, whose perception of reality comes not from the senses but from what they think other people want them to believe.

I think it is also reflected in the original use of the term ‘political correctness’ back in the days of the Soviet Union. Not actually correct but correct enough to prevent your summary murder, so we’ll just go with that, shall we…

The U of A affair is an embarrassment…see this article from LinkedIn that touches on the real science underlying the truth on the billboard.

As mentioned in Gator’s comment in the post earlier today, a non-skeptic, University of Washington Prof. Cliff Mass, is getting the full fury and hatred formerly reserved for plain ordinary skeptics. An actual Maoist-era shaming session was organized by some university administrators to attack Dr. Mass. Snowflake students may have been so triggered over a century old political term they wet themselves.

The problem with scaring meek people into supporting a fallacy is that things are “built upon sand” and eventually fall down. Physical engineers know this, but so-called “social engineers” think they know better. Over and over, if they base things on fallacy, they create situations that crash down in ruin, like the situation we witness in Venezuela. If, instead, they base things on Truth, unexpected benefits surprise people (as was the case when the USA unexpectedly became an energy exporter.)

There is a funny video going viral of the “Extinction Rebellion” people planning to spray down the UK Treasury with red paint, but the protesters don’t know how to operate the fire hose, and it goes out of control.

The out-of-control fire hose is highly symbolic. It symbolizes what happens to you if you think Truth is a thing you control and can manipulate. In fact Truth is a reality that controls us.

Thank you Tony, for standing by the Truth.
