It has now been more than 750 days since any hurricane has made landfall in the US. This is one of the longest periods on record. Assuming that none do the rest of the current season, the quiesced period will almost certainly continue for at least 1,000 days.
The only three year period without hurricanes in US history was around the time of the Civil War.
It has also been 18 years since a category 5 hurricane struck the US.
From Scientific American, 2007
Stronger Link Found between Hurricanes and Global Warming
A century’s worth of records suggests that hurricanes are on the rise and a warming Atlantic is to blame
“Even if we take the extreme of these error estimates, we are left with a significant trend since 1890 and a significant trend in major hurricanes starting anytime before 1920,” say atmospheric scientists Greg Holland of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., and Peter Webster of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
It has also been 18 years since a category 5 hurricane struck the US.
There are people that still think Katrina was a category 5.
Amino,
I had to check to refresh my memory regarding Katrina’s strength. Certainly the media treated it as if it were a “5” and I would venture a guess that if your average “man on the street” could name any hurricane it would be Katrina.
But both NOAA and even Wikipedia state that it made landfall as a Category 3.
Yes, it was a Cat 5 for a time in the Gulf, but later that season Rita surpassed Katrina as the strongest hurricane ever in the Gulf of Mexico. Good luck trying to find sometone who remembers that!
A decrease in severity in extreme weather. This is more proof in the real world that the global warming hypothesis is wrong.
Also, anyone who thinks will see that what Al Gore has predicted isn’t happening.
More Al Gore comedy, oooo 150 years it’s such a discovery that CO2 causes all these bad things http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agKo0PXjvAw&feature=player_embedded#!
“The only three year period without hurricanes in US history was around the time of the Civil War.”
Does history repeat itself?
You mean there’s going to be another Civil War? ;o)
If the progressives steal a number of seats in this election (think Al Franken), you bet there will be another civil war.
Does history repeat itself?
No, but “it sure as hell rhymes” “Mark Twain” says.
I find your post to be in bad taste considering what other parts of the world are experiencing.
“Research Update October 18: During 2010, the global total number of hurricanes reached at least a 30-year low. With Megi, the past 24-months have seen 71 hurricane-strength tropical cyclones (> 64 knots maximum wind speed) globally.”

“I find your post to be in bad taste considering what other parts of the world are experiencing.”
So do I. I was caught in hurricane Charlie in 2004 (not a major hurricane by any means but had a profound impact to those subject to it), and to say that the US is ok, sod the rest of the world. which this post seems to be saying is in very bad taste. People all over the world suffer climate extremes to great cost and posts like this are very unwelcome.
Grow up you sensitive babies…had to get that off my chest. I’m sick of how sensitive people are these days. Say anything and some ass will find something to complain about.
Eddy. Is that your guilt-complex talking?
I think you’re missing the larger point here: regardless of what you “think” is happening in the rest of the world the fact is that the alarmist voices that perpetuate doom and gloom are patently WRONG and the proof is not in statistical data but hard science, i.e. there are actual records that prove that what you are saying is not the case.
What you do not or choose to not remember is that we now have access to information across the entire globe. No longer is it 1995 when we may or may not have heard about hurricanes, tornados, mudslides, earthquakes, etc, etc. Now we hear about these things when they happen or *while* they are happening. We are so conditioned to create some causal relationship between these events that we actually think they are all related. In some sense they are: the Earth has weather patterns of which we cannot and will never really understand. The computer models that Gore and his counterparts have professed to be rock hard science have turned out to be rock hard *theory* which, for the most part, beyond the Earth going through a warming cycle (which began long before industrialization) have been wrong.
Don’t confuse Global Warming with Anthropogenic Global Warming. They are two completely different entities. The Earth is warming. It is not our fault. Nor are the “disasters” we constantly hear about.
There are actually people out there that associate the tidal wave destruction with Anthropogenic Global Warming. Unreal.
Open your eyes to what the definition of science really is: Science is theory and ACCEPTED Science is that which has been proven. Gore talks about theory only. Nothing more. There is no proof.
“People all over the world suffer climate extremes to great cost and posts like this are very unwelcome.” Oh, also forgot to ask you something: if we experienced another “Little Ice Age” would you consider it a result of the Global Warming and those poor people who suffered through climate extremes didn’t deserve it because we are all guilty of it occuring? Well, that started in the 1600s and lasted for somewhere around 300 years. Now, the IPCC in all it’s wisdom considers the LII and the corresponding “Medieval Warming Period” only to be localized events and not consistent with a global cooling or heating cycle. Using the IPCC information to which you are already enslaved to as “the truth” your argument is invalid simply because the IPCC states that these types of events that you refer to may only be localized events with no relationship to global cooling/warming.
Kinda puts it into perspective, doesn’t it?
For goodness sake, people. Read what is out there and make up your own mind! The media doesn’t care about the truth: they only care about what sells. Fear sells. The end of the world is nigh sells! Guilt sells!
The IPCC is now a political orginization. Their funding is dependant on the foolish whims of government officials appealing to the voters’ ignorance. “I believe in man made global warming. Vote for me.” Then, to the scientists they say, “You better make sure I’m right because if you’re not you lose your job.”
That’s the way it works.
Why is it in bad taste to post good news for the US regarding hurricanes? Or have I missed something in Goddard’s post?
Would have been in good taste for me to cheer the fact that no planes ran into our buildings in my country shortly after 911?
My good fortune is meaningless juxtaposed against the suffering of others.
I think you missed the years 1980-1983. There were no landfalls in 1981 and 1982 – now we have no landfalls in 2009 and 2010.
Right. But that is only two years. The only three year period was in the 1860s.
It was three years too: August 1980 – August 1983 (no landfalls in 1981 and 1982).
The last landfall was in September 2008 – thats now two years. Because the hurricane season is now almost over, we can predict that it will probably be at least close to three years (no landfalls in 2009 and 2010).
