Lead Scientist Needed : Those With Knowledge Of Science Need Not Apply

Global temperatures directly affect the acidity of the ocean, which in turn changes the acoustical properties of sea water. New research suggests that global warming may give Earth’s oceans the same hi-fi sound qualities they had more than 100 million years ago, during the Age of the Dinosaurs, according to the American Institute of Physics.

The reason for this surprising communication upgrade is that whales vocalize in the low-frequency sound range, typically less than 200 hertz, and the new research predicts that by the year 2100, global warming will acidify saltwater sufficiently to make low-frequency sound near the ocean surface travel significantly farther than it currently does — perhaps twice as far.

Rhode Island acoustician David G Browning, lead scientist on the research team, will present his findings at the 164th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), held 22 – 26 October in Kansas City, Missouri.

He explains the sea change this way: “We call it the Cretaceous acoustic effect, because ocean acidification forced by global warming appears to be leading us back to the similar ocean acoustic conditions as those that existed 110 million years ago, during the Age of Dinosaurs.”

Earth to lead scientist ….. as seawater warms it develops lower CO2 solubility – so alkalinity increases.

  1. Interesting paper but it didn’t get me as excited as his seminal work:

“Analysis and effectiveness of deer whistles for motor vehicles: frequencies, levels, and animal threshold responses”

Although I felt he never got the recognition he deserved on his ground breaking deer whistle research. Although now that he has managed to squeeze the words ‘global warming’ into his latest paper I see this giant of a man is *finally* getting getting the world wide coverage and recognition he has deserved.

Is that why sparkling water is more noisy that still?

  3. Bruce of Newcastle says:

The other neat thing is that when the temperature rises the chemical activity of H+ ions rises, so the pH goes down. But the warmer water also increases the chemical activity of the OH- ion, so because there’re more OH- ions than H+ ions the sea water becomes more alkaline even as the pH falls.

Normal pH meters correct for this, but in this world of adjustments on adjustments it is an easy thing to accidentally forget to do.

I should say that Fig 2 in this post suggests pH measurement is kosher since the tropics are more alkaline than cooler deep water and at high latitude.

  4. Brian G Valentine says:

The speed of sound in any medium is the (square root) of the compressibility divided by the density. How the pH influences that is left to the imagination, I guess

    pile of shit

  5. Rosco says:

Anything to prop up a failed hypothesis.

Since 97 % of the CO2 increases are not from burning fossil fuels a significant decrease of CO2 in the warming ocean is probably already occuring. Further, the oceans are effectively a huge buffer and changes in pH would require far more CO2 forcing that a paltry 0.04 % of an atmosphere which is already 1000 times less dense than seawater.

Not as dense as climate scientists though.

They always seem to come up with some new startling fact which can never be verified and probably never will be – and which they try to justify by some outlandish explanation.

I always liked the one about the 2 law of thermodynamics NOT being falsified because there is still a “NET” flow of heat from hot to cold ??????

So backradiation heats the surface though the NET flow of heat cools the surface ????

Funny how all Obama supporters seem like this to me. I know it’s an over-generalization, but their conduct reminds me very much of this

      I have no explanation

Climate Change papers are so interesting.

Title: “Response of the Arctic Pteropod Limacina helicina to Projected Future Environmental Conditions”
    Summary: Panic! Panic! Panic!

Details: Buried deep within the paper you find…. “In all experiments, including in the 3 d long measurements of the gut clearance, the survival rates for pteropods were 100%, suggesting that the pteropods did not experience an excessive level of stress from sampling and during experimental exposures.”

Too bad the oceans are getting more alkaline, not acidic. Besides, AGW hasn’t even happened.

One scientist out of many peddling bad science.
