Scientists Believe That Faster Growing Crops Will Lead To Armageddon

CO2 makes crops grow faster, which causes more greenhouse gases, which means the climate will change and kill us all.

A new study led by the University of California, Davis finds that more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, coupled with rising temperatures, is making rice agriculture a larger source of the potent greenhouse gas methane.

“Our results show that rice agriculture becomes less climate-friendly as our atmosphere continues to change,” said Kees Jan van Groenigen, research fellow at Trinity College Dublin.

The data showed that rice plants grow faster as more carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere. In turn, this growth ramps up the metabolism of the microscopic organisms that live in the soil beneath rice paddies and produce methane, pushing more methane into the atmosphere.

It might appear obvious to anyone with half a brain that a rice patty absorbs exactly the same amount of carbon as it produces.

During the 19th century, scientists discovered the law of conservation of mass – matter is neither created nor destroyed – but many climate scientists appear to have skipped high school and gone directly to work for the government.

You missed the point entirely. UC Davis said that a warming climate will cause rice paddies to produce more methane, not CO2. Your point about conservation of matter is irrelevant,
Despite your error, your blog is still an interesting read.

  2. Let’s face it. Everything we parasitic people do to this planet is very, very bad. Let’s just pack up the space ship and go back to the home planet, since it’s pretty obvious we are invaders to what was a utopia. Last call for spaceship boarding coming soon.

Apparently there are less than 6 degrees of separation between any science and global warming, and Kevin Bacon.

These people ought to be forced to live under honest to God communism for a few years, like in Cuba, since they love it so much. Let ’em see what they advocate is really like.

  5. I suspect a lot of people would change philosophies if they were forced to live with the consequences of their beliefs. Al Gore would flee AGW if he had to live without airplanes, movie producers, and Nobel prizes. I just can’t picture him in the bush in Australia living off the land. It’s so much easier when someone else lives out the consequences.

Strange these plant things. Just like some weird natural CCS system that doesn’t require a vast amount of public money.
    Strange, very strange.

  7. “The analysis revealed that increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere boosted rice yields by 24.5 percent.”

I think the heading should have been changed from:

    “Rice Paddies Accelerate Global Warming”

    To:

“Huge food benefits to humanity from accelerated global warming”

Ah, the search to find the optimum intended state for a planet’s climate and it’s eco-systems, on a planet whose state is in constant flux. Talk about job security.

  9. mikegeo says:

What an asinine article. They say increased CO2 gives greater rice yields, but increased warmth reduces rice yields. So here’s the “rice theory” of AGW. If you see rice yields go down, it obviously means that the increased temperature that caused it, has nothing to do with CO2. Quick, call Hansen!

  10. Michael says:

According to a 2004 study by the FAO, rice was the staple food for 3.3 Billion people in 2002. Just think of the reductions in global warming if all those people died from starvation from a prohibition of growing rice. Gore could rev up his private jet without any guilt.

  11. Robert Austin says:

“The data showed that rice plants grow faster as more carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere.”

Any rational and mentally balanced human being would see this as a good thing but alarmists congenitally unable to concede any beneficent effect from an increase in atmospheric CO2. Their outrageous contortions of logic employed to achieve the demonization of CO2 are truly ludicrous.

    • You should read the scientific reports on the dangers of global warming… first a sentence or two admitting grudgingly the empirical evidence for the benefits. Then 50 pages speculating about the possible negative consequences, typically with the help of a model or two.
