I just got word about one of my friends who lives at Drake, which is in the Big Thompson canyon and they have literally lost everything. They had to be rescued by helicopter. There house has been there since at least the 50’s and they don’t know if it is still standing. There was 5 feet of water in the basement when they left just from the rainwater. They can’t get back for at least two months to survey the damage. They said the flooding was much worse than the 76 event.
The 1976 rain was much more intense and killed 150 people. This storm the water rose more slowly.
This is all very true. The other positive aspect is that we have much better communication now than we did in 1976.
The 1976 storm happened very fast, and most people were on vacation camping. I still can’t get a decent cell signal in that canyon.
