Not So Beautiful Theories

“It doesn’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. If it doesn’t agree with experiment, it’s wrong.”

Plummeting US Temperatures

Ten years ago the US had a very warm winter and spring, which was widely attributed to “global warming“.

Tropical storm Sandy made landfall at the end of October, 2012 and may have won the election for Obama and Biden.

Since then US temperatures have plummeted with the first five months of 2022 being among the coldest on record. The average mean temperature from January-May was ninth lowest since 1895. These numbers may change a little as more data for May gets reported.

The average minimum temperature was fifth lowest.

The average maximum temperature was about two degrees below average.

The percent of days above 60F was second lowest.

The percent of nights below 20F was highest on record.

The forecast for the next two weeks doesn’t look much warmer.

The New York Times claimed 2012 was by far the hottest on record in the US.

2012 Was Hottest Year Ever in U.S. – The New York Times

The average maximum temperature was lower that 1934 and 1921.

The average mean temperature was about the same was 1921, and slightly higher than 1931 and 1934.

The percent of hot days during 2012 didn’t place in the top twenty.

As CO2 has increased, the frequency of hot days has decreased, as has the areal coverage of hot weather.

Junk Science For Intellectuals

The Economist says corals are threatened by global warming and the Great Barrier Reef is disappearing.

Coral coverage at the Great Barrier Reef is at a record high.

Long-Term Monitoring Program – Annual Summary Report of Coral Reef Condition 2020/21 | AIMS

The Economist made this claim :

“Surveys conducted this March showed that another Barrier Reef bleaching event is now under way. This instance is particularly worrying because it is the first to take place during a Pacific cooling event called La Niña—rather than during either its warming opposite, El Niño, or an intermediate period between the two.”

Had they done any research they would have known that their claim doesn’t make any sense.

“La Niña occurs when equatorial trade winds become stronger, changing ocean surface currents and drawing cooler deep water up from below. This results in a cooling of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. The enhanced trade winds also help to pile up warm surface waters in the western Pacific and to the north of Australia.”

What is La Niña and how does it impact Australia?

The greatest expansion of life on earth (including the appearance of corals) occurred 540 million years ago when CO2 levels were 15X higher than now and temperatures were 10C warmer.

A lot of coral reefs are doing badly – but it doesn’t have anything to do with global warming or CO2.

“like in many areas along the Central American Caribbean coast, coral reefs in Cozumel are in trouble. Unsustainable tourism and overfishing damage critical habitat and remove important wildlife that help keep coral reefs healthy. “
