Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) on Thursday said the U.S. must prepare for an Arctic Ocean that is ice-free in the summer months within the next 20 years.

Sullivan, speaking at a hearing for the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, which he chairs, pointed to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicating that as of 2011, Arctic sea ice was “42 percent thinner than it was in 1979.”

“If this trend continues, the Arctic Ocean may be ice-free during the summer months within the next 20 years,” he said.

There has been no trend in sea ice extent or volume over the past 12 years.

Arctic sea ice is about two meters thick –  the same as 60 years ago and 80 years ago.

There is no indication of a long term decline in Arctic sea ice. It fluctuates cyclically with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation.

Due to cold air streaming across the Bering Strait, Arctic sea ice is rapidly growing and approaching the 1981 to 2010 median. The only remaining area with below average extent is the Barents Sea, which fills out every winter.

Temperatures in Greenland and Iceland warmed cyclically until the 1930s, cooled through the 1970s, warmed until about ten years ago – and are now declining again.

The animation below shows daily sea ice volume since 2007, animated by month.   The trend in January, June, July, August, September, October, November and December sea ice volume is up.

Almost all melting occurs in June and July. Summer is too short to melt all the ice, particularly since summer temperatures near the North Pole have been running below normal for the past eighteen years. By early August, the sun is too low in the sky to melt much ice near the pole.
